COMMUNICATOR 3000/XL XL RELEASE 2.1

MPE XL Native Language I/O Support

by Jesse Chin/Donna Chen
Commercial Systems Division

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

The Native Language I/O subsystem (NLIO) provides access to native
terminals and printers as an integral part of MPE XL on Release 2.1. In
some countries, the internal code used on the host system and the
external code used in the peripherals are not the same. NLIO provides
the conversion so that the differences between the coding schemes are
transparent to application programs and end users.

NLIO has two facilities. One is the code conversion for Asian character
strings, the other is the context analysis facility and directional
control for Middle East character strings. For Asian languages, both
terminals and printers are supported. The languages supported are:
Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. For
Middle East languages, only the printers require support from NLIO.

CONFIGURATION REQUIREMENTS

NLIO works for HP peripherals which contain the native language character
font and are configured as NLIO devices. NLIO has no effect on other
devices.

The devices to be used must be configured as a NLIO capable device via
SYSGEN or NMMGR and also be activated for a particular language using a
new utility NLIOUTIL.

The devices connected through HPIB must be configured by the system
manager using SYSGEN. This is done by specifying MODE=NLIO to make a
device NLIO capable.

NLIO devices connected to an MPE XL system via Local Area Network (LAN)
must be configured by using the Node Management Configuration Services
(NMMGR) utility. To configure a serial device as NLIO capable, one may
simply enter "Y" for NLIO Y/N in the DTS TERMINAL PROFILE menu of NMMGR.

For information about configuration using SYSGEN, please consult the
System Startup Configuration, & Shutdown (P/N 32650-60005). For
information about configuration using NMMGR, refer to Configuring Systems
for Terminals, Printers and Other Serial Devices (P/N 32022-61000).

NLIOUTIL

NLIO includes a new utility which allows the user to activate native
devices dynamically. With this utility, the user can enable or disable a
NLIO capable device for a specified language.

The MPE XL System Utilities Reference Manual (P/N 32650-60029) and the
MPE XL Quick Reference Guide (P/N 32650-60045) provide detailed
information on this utility. NLIOUTIL error messages are included in the
Error Messages Manual Vol 2 (P/N 32650-60016).
