COMMUNICATOR 3000/XL XL RELEASE 2.1

Native Mode Device Files

by William O'Shaughnessy

NEW SYSTEM ACCESS TO DEVICE INFORMATION

This release of MPE XL uses a new method for getting information on
devices. This method is called Native Mode Device Files (NMDF). NMDF
creates a new account named 3000devs. This account is for system
internal use only. Its name was chosen because of system functionality
requirements. Programs that scan the directory should be aware of this
account.

NMDF NEEDS DISC SPACE ON LDEV1

Another important impact of NMDF is that each device or class in the
system now takes about four sectors of disk space on LDEV 1. Before
creating any new devices or classes be sure that the system has the
required free disk space on LDEV 1. Devices are usually created at
system boot time, after being configured before system shutdown by a
subsystem such as SYSGEN.PUB.SYS or NMMGR.PUB.SYS. The DISCFREE.PUB.SYS
utility can be used to check the amount of free disc space.
