HP CD Extensions for MPE/iX Installation and Administration Guide
Installing the Software
The HP CD extensions server software is delivered on the MPE/iX 5.0 FOS
tape or on an HPINSTAL/iX CD-ROM disk. You can install the software from
the tape or disk.
For instructions on installing software from a tape, refer to the HP 3000
MPE/iX Installation, Update, and Add-on Manual (P/N 36126-90001). For
instructions on installing software from a CD-ROM disk, refer to Using
CD-ROM to Update Your HP 3000 System Software (P/N B3159-90001).
NOTE If you have just purchased a new HP 3000 system running MPE/iX 5.0,
the server software may already be installed. To check whether the
software is installed, list all files with a PUB.SYS extension by
typing:
:listf CD@.PUB.SYS
After installing the files on your system, you need to make some changes
to the CDSTARTJ.PUB.SYS file that is installed as part of the software.
For instructions on changing the file, see "Editing the CDSTARTJ.PUB.SYS
File" later in this chapter. You must also have your HP 3000 system
configured for network services and TCP/IP.
Editing the CDSTARTJ.PUB.SYS File
Before you can use CDSERVER, you need to add LDEV numbers for available
CD-ROM drives to the CDSTARTJ.PUB.SYS file. You can also edit this file
to change either the cache size for a CD-ROM drive or the number of PCs
that can be used with HP CD extensions.
Adding LDEV Numbers.
You must add the LDEV number for each CD-ROM drive on your system to the
CDSTARTJ.PUB.SYS file. If you don't specify the correct LDEV number,
CDSERVER will not be able to locate the drive and will hang.
The LDEV number for a CD-ROM drive is specified when the drive is
configured. See Appendix A for information about the drive
configuration.
To specify an LDEV number:
1. In the CDSTARTJ.PUB.SYS file, locate the following line:
!RUN CDSERVER.PUB.SYS;INFO="2048,5,Ldevlist"
2. Replace Ldevlist with the LDEV number for the CD-ROM drive.
For example, if a drive's LDEV number is 4, the new line will be:
!RUN CDSERVER.PUB.SYS;INFO="2048,5,4"
3. If you need to add an LDEV number for more than one drive, enter
the number for each drive with a comma after the number.
For example, if the first drive's LDEV number is 4 and the second
drive's LDEV number is 6, the new line will be:
!RUN CDSERVER.PUB.SYS;INFO="2048,5,4,6"
When you configure more than one CD-ROM drive on CDSERVER, users will see
these drives as different drive letters on their systems.
Changing the Cache Size.
Different cache sizes may affect CDSERVER's performance.
A separate cache is allocated for each CD-ROM drive. Only one cache size
can be specified when invoking CDSERVER. You must provide a SIZE
parameter specified in kilobytes (KB). Hewlett-Packard suggests using 2
MB (2048 KB). If you specify a cache size of 0, no caching will occur,
and CDSERVER's speed will decrease significantly.
To change the cache size:
1. In the CDSTARTJ.PUB.SYS file, locate the following line:
!RUN CDSERVER.PUB.SYS;INFO="2048,5,Ldevlist"
The cache size is the first parameter. In this example, the cache
size is 2048 KB, or 2 MB.
2. Replace 2048 with the cache size you want for the drives.
Specifying the Number of PCs.
You can edit the CDSTARTJ.PUB.SYS file to change the maximum number of
PCs you can connect to CDSERVER.
The number of connected PCs will affect CDSERVER's performance.
Connecting too many PCs may increase the time it takes for a client PC to
access the CD-ROM drive.
To change the number of PCs:
1. In the CDSTARTJ.PUB.SYS file, locate the following line:
!RUN CDSERVER.PUB.SYS;INFO="2048,5,Ldevlist"
The number of PCs is the second parameter. In this example, the
maximum number of PCs is 5.
2. Replace 5 with the maximum number of PCs you want to connect to
CDSERVER.
