Identifying and Installing Your HP 2340A DTC
[REV BEG]

NOTE If you do not have an HP 2340A DTC, skip to the section "To connect the LAN terminators to the computer," in this chapter.
[REV END] As a part of your new computer, you received at least one box containing an HP 2340A Data Communications and Terminal Controller (DTC). The HP 2340A allows terminals, PCs, and printers to use the computer and be used by the computer. Figure 2-19 is a picture of the HP 2340A.
CAUTION The following procedure can be followed only if you have the HP 2340A DTC(s) that match the port configuration found in Figure 2-19 and Figure 2-20 . Please verify that the back or all of your DTCs match the illustrations. If you have a different DTC, the procedures that follow will not enable you to perform the installation; therefore, you will need to have an HP support representative perform the installation.

Figure 2-19. HP 2340A Back View Read this list of steps to get an overview of installing your HP 2340A: * Connect the HP 2340A to the computer using the local area network (LAN) cable. * Connect the terminal(s) to the HP 2340A. * Connect the printer(s) to the HP 2340A. * Connect and plug in the power cable to the HP 2340A. Before you start Before you start, make sure that the following tasks have been done: * Your HP 2340A is unpacked and on a table. * You have verified that the back of all of your DTCs match those in Figure 2-19 and Figure 2-20 . * The terminals are unpacked and placed where you want them. * The power switch on the front of the HP 2340A is off. If you have not yet done any of these steps, you should do them now. Make sure you have plenty of work space in front and in back of the HP 2340A. To connect the HP 2340A to the computer 1. Find the round LAN connector (also known as a BNC connector) on the back left side of the HP 2340A. See Figure 2-20 (4). It will be labeled LAN Interface. If there is a protective cover on the LAN connector, remove it.

AC power socket 2. On the back of the computer, connect a "T" connector (3) onto the LAN connector (1). See Figure 2-21 . The "T" connector is part number 92227N. Use a push on and twist motion to connect the "T" connector. It is on and locked when it can no longer be twisted.

Figure 2-21. LAN Connection 3. Connect a LAN terminator (4) part number 92227P to one end of the "T" connector (3). See Figure 2-21 . 4. Connect the LAN cable (2) part number 92227B to the other side of the "T" connector (3). See Figure 2-21 . 5. On the back of the DTC, connect a "T" connector (3) to the connector labeled LAN Interface. 6. Connect the LAN cable (2) leading from the computer to one side of the "T" connector that you just connected to the DTC. 7. If you have more than one DTC, connect another LAN cable (2) to the other end of the "T" connector. Repeat step 5 and this step until the last DTC has been connected (up to three DTCs). 8. On the last DTC, connect a LAN terminator (4) to the other side of the "T" connector (3). See Figure 2-21 . 9. Cover the LAN "T" connector assembly (1, 2, and 3) that connects both the computer and the DTC with the fabric, anti-static cover (4) that came with the "T" connector. See Figure 2-22 .

Figure 2-22. LAN Connector Cover To complete installation of the HP 2340A DTC To find your DTC station address (LAN address). Each DTC has a unique local area network (LAN) station address to distinguish between one DTC and another. The twelve-digit station address is located on a label found on the back panel of the DTC. See Figure 2-23 .

Figure 2-23. DTC Station Address (LAN Address) An example of a DTC station (LAN address): 08-00-09-00-21-54 Write down your DTC station address (represented as LAN address on the back of the DTC) exactly how it is printed on the label. Note that the LAN address provided on your DTC does not include hyphens; you must include a hyphen between every pair of numbers. Later, when you enter the LAN address into the computer, you will need to insert hyphens: one hyphen after each two digits (as shown in the above example). If you have more than one DTC, record each DTC station address here on the following line(s), including the hyphens between each pair of numbers. First DTC station address: ______________________ . Second DTC station address: ______________________ . Third DTC station address: ______________________ . It is a good idea to label the DTC(s) as DTC1, DTC2, and DTC3 (using the order in which you will enter the addresses into the system). This will be useful when modifying configurations at a later time.
