Phase 6: Configuring HP Predictive Support
Configuring HP Predictive Support consists of running psconfig to enter
two basic categories of information:
* Required Fields. A required field is one for which a value must
be assigned; psconfig does not assume its value. Without this
information, HP Predictive Support cannot properly perform all of
its functions.
* Default Fields. A default field is defined as one for which
psconfig has assigned a default value. Unless you wish to
customize your system (see Chapter 4) by assigning another value
to a default field, there is no need to configure it.
NOTE Make sure that the required information is configured into psconfig
since the information:
* Ultimately forms the basis of customer system recognition by
the HP Response Center.
* Determines whether HP Predictive Support runs properly on
the system.
Running psconfig
Type the following at the MPE prompt:
run psconfig.pred.sys
After introductory information, you are placed into required fields mode.
Required Fields Mode.
In required fields mode, psconfig prompts you for the missing but
required information for the following categories:
* Customer Information: customer name, system serial and model
numbers, software handle, customer contact name and phone number,
HP repair office code.
* Transfer Information: transfer method, modem LDEV or device class
and HP Response Center phone number, or HP Response Center
nodename.
* Schedule: used to set automatic run time scheduling for HP
Predictive Support to on or off.
* Peripheral Devices: enable/disable coverage on PDEVs, plus serial
and model numbers for enabled devices.
Basics About Required Fields Mode.
* Always press Return after responding to a prompt.
* If you provide a correct response, psconfig continues to
the next required field.
* If you provide an incorrect response, psconfig informs you
and provides you with another opportunity for a correct
response.
* You can leave required fields mode whenever the prompt states
"...or // to cancel", as in Type serial # of system or // to
cancel. However, if you cancel:
* psconfig warns you that HP Predictive Support cannot run
without the required information, or in the case of PDEVs,
that it does not provide coverage on unconfigured devices.
* psconfig returns you to the MPE prompt.
NOTE If you exit required fields mode before completing a category,
values for the incomplete category are saved when you respond "y"
to whether you wish to save the new values.
Entering the Required Information.
Figure 3-2 illustrates the exchange in required fields mode during an
initial run of psconfig. Note the following:
* The shaded text and the Return symbol denote responses to
psconfig prompts.
* The italicized text provides additional information about the
exchange and is neither a psconfig prompt nor a user response.
* All values shown in the illustration are samples, and do not
reflect real system numbers, model numbers, or values.
