Formatting and Initializing the Disks

The Model 20GB/A device is supported on MPE/iX as a backup device for
STORE/iX II. It is also supported through the Magneto-Optical AIFs.
Before an optical disk can be written to, it must be formatted and
initialized. Formatting prepares the surface of the optical disk for
writing, and initializing creates volume set information so that the
disks can be mounted into the MPE/iX file system as Private Volumes.
Both of these tasks are performed by using the Magneto-Optical Utility
(MOUTIL).

You can format and initialize new disks by using the INITMO command of
MOUTIL. Follow these steps:

   1. Ensure that the disks have been loaded, MOUTIL is running and the
       mail slot is locked.

          a. Run MOUTIL by entering MOUTIL at the system prompt. For
              example:

                      :MOUTIL Return

          b. Unlock the mail slot by entering the UNLOCK command at the
              MOUTIL prompt. For example:

                   moutil: UNLOCK LDEV=101 Return

          c. Put the disk in the mail slot.

                 * Side A faces up or left, depending on the model you
                     have.

                 * The metal shutter goes in first.

          d. Press the LOAD key.

SLOT 1 (or the first available slot) displays.

          e. You may press ENTER to accept the displayed choice, or you
can press the NEXT or PREV key to see the other choices.
Only those slots that are available are displayed.

              __________________________________________________________

CAUTION Load disks into slots 1 through 32 only. Do not
load disks into the drives or mail slot. If all
32 slots are full, loading a disk into drive 1,
drive 2, or the mail slot will result in a jam.

              __________________________________________________________

Pressing NEXT or PREV scrolls through selections for Slots
              1 through 32, and Drives 1 or 2.

          f. Once your choice is displayed, press ENTER. As the picker
moves the disk from the mail slot to its slot destination,
the LOAD indicator blinks and SLOT ## displays, where ## is
the actual number of the slot in which the disk is loaded.

After the picker moves the disk from the mail slot and puts
it in the chosen storage slot, the display returns to
              READY.

          g. Lock the mail slot using the LOCK command of MOUTIL.

                      moutil: LOCK LDEV=101 Return

       _________________________________________________________________

NOTE Formatting and initializing can take up to 45 minutes per
side. A full device with 32 disks (64 sides) could take up
             to 32 hours.

       _________________________________________________________________

   2. Use the INITMO command to format and initialize disks. Specify
which piece of media and which side should be initialized and
formatted by using the media= and side= parameters. You must also
specify the volume set name to be assigned to the disk by using
       the volname parameter.

In Figure 3-3 , side A of media 32 in LDEV 101 is to be
formatted and initialized. The unique volume set name assigned is
BACKUP1A. Note that MOUTIL prompts for verification before
       actually performing the task.

   3. To format and initialize all the disks in the device at once,
enter the USE MOINIT command at the MOUTIL prompt. For example:

               moutil: USE MOINIT Return

MOINIT is an editable file located in the hpc1700a.telesup account. This
file contains a series of sixty-four INITMO commands (one for each side
of each piece of media). You can edit this file, for example to change
the LDEV number or to change the volname. You can also substitute your
own customized file, provided it adheres to the format as illustrated in
Figure 3-4 . For example if your customized file is named INITALL,
enter:

        moutil: USE INITALL Return

NOTE If you are using pre-formatted media, MOUTIL skips the formatting step and proceeds to the initializing step.

NOTE In figure 3-4 each disk is intialized so that it can be used by STORE/iX II. (The STORE parameter default is YES).
