Chapter 3 Updating System Software With UPDATE

Loading Updated System Software With UPDATE

This section describes procedures for replacing current system software
with a new release.

1. Backing Up the System

Execute a full system backup, including backing up configuration files.
Then execute a total system shutdown, including purging or deactivating
staging groups and other system files and passwords, as required. Refer
to chapter 7, "System Backup" for additional information.

2. Resetting the System

To reset the system:

   1. At the system console, enter:

            :CTRL A
            =SHUTDOWN

   2. Mount the new system load tape on the tape drive and put the drive
       online.

   3. At the system prompt, enter:

            CTRL B

   4. At the CM> prompt, enter:

            :CM>RS

   5. Press Y in answer to the prompt:

TYPE Y TO CONFIRM YOUR INTENTION TO RESTART THE SYSTEM (Y/N)

   6. When the message TO OVERRIDE, PRESS ANY KEY WITHIN 10 SECONDS
       appears:

       Press any key.

   7. Press N in answer to the prompt:

BOOT FROM PRIMARY BOOT PATH (Y OR N?)

   8. Press Y in answer to the prompt:

BOOT FROM ALTERNATE BOOT PATH (Y OR N?)

   9. Press Y in answer to the prompt:

INTERACT WITH IPL (Y or N)?

The system will boot from the new system load tape. At the end of the
tape activity the ISL prompt (ISL>) is displayed.

3. Starting the Update

To start the update process, follow the steps described below:

   1. To start the update process, enter:

            ISL>UPDATE NOCONFIG

            or

            ISL>UPDATE

When UPDATE NOCONFIG or UPDATE is entered, the system files in
CONFIG.SYS and PUB.SYS are not restored. Only the operating
system is updated from tape. The configuration and all other
files except spooled files are loaded from disk. Spooled files
will be reloaded from tapes later.

   2. At the ISL> prompt enter:

            ISL>START NORECOVERY

   3. At the date (mm/dd/yy) and time (hh:mm:ss) prompt, if the time is
incorrect, enter the correct date and time. If date and time are
       correct, press:

            Return

4. Installing the FOS Tape

Mount the FOS tape and put the drive back online.

   1. Begin the installation process by entering:

            :AUTOINST

   2. At this point a tape request may be displayed. The request may
       look like this:

            ?14:24/#31/32/IS "FOS" ON LDEV#7 (Y/N?).

       Reply by entering:

            CTRL A

       At the = prompt, enter:

            =REPLY pin,Y

where pin is the number after the second slash in the tape request
message. If more than one FOS tape is supplied, after about five
minutes, you will be instructed to remove FOS tape Volume 1,
install FOS tape Volume 2, and set the drive online. A message
indicates completion of the FOS installation.

   3. Dismount the FOS tape.

The AUTOINST program automatically creates the account structure.

   4. After several minutes, the system displays the prompt:

HAS A SUBSYS TAPE BEEN INCLUDED IN YOUR
            INSTALLATION PACKAGE (Y/N)?

If No SUBSYS Tape is Included. If no SUBSYS tape is included press N in
answer to the prompt. Then go to the instructions for adding nonsystem
volumes and continue from there.

If a SUBSYS Tape is Included. If a SUBSYS tape is included, press Y in
answer to the prompt and mount the SUBSYS tape and put the drive online
when you receive this message:

MOUNT THE SUBSYS TAPE AND PUT THE DRIVE ON LINE.

The system may issue a tape request. If so, respond to it as previously
described. For example, enter:

     :CTRL A

At the = prompt, enter:

     =REPLY pin,Y

where pin is the process identification number, which is after the second
slash in the tape request message. It may take up to thirty minutes to
load the files from the installation tape. Completion of the SUBSYS tape
restoration is indicated by the following message:

THE SUBSYS TAPE HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY RESTORED.

Installing Special Products. Your SUBSYS tape may include files that
require special installation procedures. If so, they will be listed on
the screen, and the system will ask if you want to install them now. To
install them now, enter:

     YES

The prompt (:) will be displayed. Refer to the documentation supplied
with the software for instructions.

When you are finished, enter:

     :AUTOINST

Follow the displayed instructions. If you installed special products,
remount the SUBSYS tape to continue the update of your software.

5. Creating a New System Load Tape

This step creates a system load tape which contains the system image in
its current state.

   1. Mount a blank, write-enabled tape on the tape drive. Put the
drive online and follow the displayed instructions.

   2. You may need to respond to a tape request. It will differ from
previous tape requests, and will look something like this:

?10:49/#J13/46/LDEV# FOR "SYSGTAPE" ON TAPE (NUM)?

Enter the reply in the following format, which differs from the
       =REPLY formats used previously:

            :CTRL A

            =REPLY pin,ldev

where pin is the process identification number, which is after the
second slash, and ldev is the logical device number.

   3. The end of this process is marked by the message:

THE EXECUTION OF AUTOINST/XL IS COMPLETE.

Dismount the tape, remove the write ring, and label the tape
       according to the displayed instructions.

6. Update With the New System Load Tape

To update the system, using the newly created system load tape, follow
the steps described below:

   1. At the system console, enter:

            :CTRL A

            =SHUTDOWN

   2. Mount the newly created system load tape and reset the system by
       entering:

            :CTRL B
            CM>RS

   3. Press Y in answer to the message:

ENTER Y TO CONFIRM YOUR INTENTION TO RESTART THE
            SYSTEM (Y/N?)

   4. When the message TO OVERRIDE, PRESS ANY KEY WITHIN 10 SECONDS
       appears:

       Press any key.

   5. Press N in answer to the prompt:

BOOT FROM PRIMARY BOOT PATH (Y OR N?)

   6. Press Y in answer to the prompt:

BOOT FROM ALTERNATE BOOT PATH (Y OR N?)

The system will boot from the new system load tape.

   7. Press Y in answer to the prompt:

INTERACT WITH IPL (Y or N)?

At the end of the tape activity, the ISL prompt (ISL>) is
       displayed.

   8. To update from the new system load tape, enter:

            ISL>UPDATE

   9. Type in the current date and time in answer to the prompt:

            ENTER THE DATE AND TIME.

(Use the format dd/mm/yy for date and hh:mm:ss for 24 hour time).
If the date and time are correct, press Return.

A series of messages will appear and after about 25 minutes the
system automatically resets itself and restarts the boot routine.

  10. Boot from the primary boot path by not pressing a key in answer to
       the prompt:

TO OVERRIDE, PRESS ANY KEY WITHIN 10 SECONDS.

The system boots from the system disk.

  11. When the ISL> prompt appears enter:

            ISL>START NORECOVERY

  12. Press Return at the date and time prompt unless either is
       incorrect.

The system restart is complete when the MPE XL logon prompt is
       displayed.

  13. Log on by entering:

            MPE XL:HELLO MANAGER.SYS;HIPRI

  14. At the command interpreter prompt (:), start streaming and
       spooling capabilities:

            :STREAMS 10

            :STARTSPOOL LP

  15. Remove the system load tape and store it.

7. Reloading Spooled Files

To reload spooled files, follow the steps described below:

   1. Mount the SPOOL tape on the tape drive and put the drive online.

   2. Create the file equation, enter the SPFXFER utility, and restore
       the files:

            :FILE T;DEV=TAPE
            :SPFXFER
            >INPUT @.@;*T
            >EXIT

   3. Remove the tape from the drive and store it.

If files are restored to a device other than the one from which they
originally came, the files are automatically assigned new file numbers
and new devicefile IDs.
