System Administrator's Quick Reference Guide

Starting Your System

1. Saving Spoolfiles

If any spoolfiles exist, save them to tape before you start the following
procedure. Additional information on this procedure is found in chapter
8, "System Shutdown."

     :FILE T;DEV=TAPE
     :SPFXFER
     >OUTPUT @.@;*T;PURGE
     >EXIT

This results in a tape request from the system. To respond to the tape
request, assign a logical device number to the named file by entering:

     CTRL A
     REPLY pin,ldev

The pin is your process identification number (PIN) from the tape request
and ldev is the drive's logical device number.

2. Shutting Down the System

To shut down the system, enter:

     :CTRL A

     =SHUTDOWN

A series of messages appear indicating the end of the shutdown procedure.

3. Resetting and Rebooting the System

To reset the system:

   1. At the system console, enter:

            :CTRL B

   2. At the CM> prompt, enter:

            CM>RS

This executes a hard reset that resets memory.

   3. Boot the system from the primary boot path (system disk) by
       performing one of the following:

       a. Allow Autoboot to boot the system by ignoring the message TO
OVERRIDE, PRESS ANY KEY WITHIN 10 SECONDS.

       b. Override Autoboot and press Y when the BOOT FROM PRIMARY BOOT
           PATH? (Y or N) appears.

At the end of the disk activity, the system will start automatically if
it has an AUTOEXEC file. If it does not, the ISL prompt (ISL>) will be
displayed. If the ISL prompt is displayed, restart the system manually
as described below.

4. Restarting the System Manually

At the ISL> prompt, enter:

     START NORECOVERY

or

     START RECOVERY

This instructs the system to boot from the system disk. The option
NORECOVERY ensures that the changes to the NMCONFIG file take effect.
All other files are also loaded from disk. The console operator is
logged on. Users are allowed access to the system and all mounted
nonsystem volumes. Because the CONFIG.SYS group on the system disk
contains the modified file, the system is now reconfigured according to
it. The option RECOVERY should be used when the restart is due to a
system failure.

5. Logging On

At the end of the start procedure, enter your logon ID and password:

     MPE XL:HELLO MANAGER.SYS;HIPRI

6. Restarting Job Streaming and Spooling

To restart the job stream facility and the spooler, enter:

     :STREAMS 10
     :STARTSPOOL LP

This starts the streams facility and the spooler for the device class LP
(line printer).

7. Reloading Spooled Files

If you have saved spoolfiles to tape, follow the steps described below to
reload them:

   1. Mount the spool tape on the tape drive and put the drive on line.

   2. Create the file equation, enter the SPFXFER utility, and restore
       the files:

            :FILE T;DEV=TAPE
            :SPFXFER
            >INPUT @.@;*T
            >EXIT

   3. Remove the tape from the drive and store it.

If files are restored to a device other than the one from which they
originally came, the files are automatically assigned new file numbers
and new device file IDs.
