Netware 3.11 for the HP 3000 Installing and Administering Guide
Configure Host Printers
The following procedures show how to configure a printer that is directly
attached to the HP 3000 as a MPE/iX printer. The print server (PSERVER)
managing the printer is running on the HP 3000.
NOTE Make sure you use unique names for each of the printer
configuration items: MPE/ iX printer, print queue, printer name
and the NetWare/iX print server.
1. Pull out a copy of the Host Printer Worksheet. A copy is included
in this chapter, and in Appendix A.
2. Create a MPE/iX printer using standard system administration
commands on your HP 3000 system. If your printer uses environment
files, append the file name to the device in the form:
device_name/envfile.group.account
Record the name on your Host Printer Worksheet in the column,
MPE/iX Device Name.
3. Record the device name's MPE/iX output priority on the Host
Printer Worksheet in the space: (priority = ). The default
output priority is 8.
4. To verify the host printer configuration, use the MPE command:
:SHOWDEV device_name
where device_name is the MPE_iX device name you created.
5. Make sure NetWare/iX has been started:
a. Log into your MPE system:
:hello manager.sys,netware
b. Type the command:
:nw status
c. If you need to start NetWare, type:
:nw start
6. From a NetWare client, log into the NetWare/iX server as
SUPERVISOR and run:
F:> PCONSOLE
7. Create a NetWare Print Queue by choosing: "Print Queue
Information".
Press <Insert> and type in the print queue name. Record the name
on your worksheet under the column, NetWare Print Queue.
8. Next, create a NetWare Print Server: Press <Escape> and choose
"Print Server Information".
9. Press <Insert> and type the name of the print server. If you want
to use the default provided with the product, enter the name
NWIX_PSERVER. Record the name on your worksheet (after the
heading, NetWare Print Server:)
10. Next, create a Printer Name: Choose the print server name you
created in step 9 and press <Enter>, then choose "Printer Server
Configuration" followed by "Printer Configuration".
11. Select an unused slot (numbered 0-15) for the printer. Make a
note of the slot number on your Host Printer Worksheet in the
column, Slot #.
(This slot number is also entered in SCONSOLE in a later step.)
Slot numbers must match between MPE and NetWare.
12. Type in the host printer name. This name does not have to match
the host printer name you will configure in SCONSOLE. This name is
informational only.
13. For Type, press <Enter> and select: Remote Other/Unknown.The
other values are filled in automatically. Press <Escape> then yes
to save changes, then press <Escape> again.
14. Next, allocate the printer to a queue by choosing: "Queues
Serviced by Printer".
15. Select the printer you created above (in step 10).
16. Press <Insert> and from the list displayed, select the print queue
name you created above (in step 7).
Enter a NetWare priority (such as 1).
(For more information about NetWare priorities, see the Print
Server manual.
Press <Enter>. Press the <Escape> key to back up screens until
you are prompted to exit PCONSOLE, then highlight yes and press
enter to exit.
17. Identify the MPE/iX printer to NetWare:
Each MPE/iX device needs a unique SCONSOLE Host Printer name
associated with it. For each device entered on the Host Printer
Worksheet, enter a unique name in the column marked Host Printer
Name.
Log into your MPE system:
:hello manager.sys,netware
18. Type the command:
:run sconsole
19. From the Main menu, get to the Add a Host Printer To System screen
by selecting items as follows:
Configuration (item 2)
Service Configuration (item 2)
Print Service Configuration (item 2)
Host Printer Configuration (item 1)
Add a Host Printer to a System (item 2).
Use your Host Printer Worksheet and Table 6-1 to answer the
prompts:

Start Host Print Services
To allow the host printing processes (rprinter and PSERVER) to start
automatically when NetWare/iX is started, do the following:
1. From the SCONSOLE Printer Configuration menu, select:
3. Remote Printer Parameters
2. Toggle the field:
Start RPRINTER at Product Startup ACTIVE.
3. Return to the previous menu (Printer Configuration) and select:
4. PSERVER Parameters
4. Toggle the field:
Start PSERVER at Product Startup ACTIVE.
5. Next, you must start the print services. Save your configuration
and exit from SCONSOLE.
6. Assuming you are still logged in as manager.sys, netware, from the
MPE prompt, type:
:nw start print
This command starts both the PSERVER and the rprinter processes.
( Table 6-3 shows start and stop command options for host
printing.)
7. Test printing a file:
a. From a NetWare client, log into the NetWare/iX server.
b. Choose a file to print and use the NetWare command:
F:> NPRINT testfile q=printqueue
Where testfile is a file you can print, and printqueue is the NetWare
print queue you just created (see your Host Printer Worksheet).
Start/Stop Printing Commands
Table 6-3 lists thestart and stop host printing options.
Table 6-3. Start and Stop Printing Commands
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| Command | Description |
| | |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| nw start | If you have used SCONSOLE to automatically start print |
| | services (PSERVER and rprinter), nw start starts the |
| | NetWare/iX product and host print services. |
| | |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| nw start print | Starts both th PSERVER and rprinter for host printing |
| | processing. |
| | |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| nw stop print | Stops both the PSERVER and rprinter. Rprinter |
| | completes active jobs before shutting down. |
| | |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| nw stop print now | Stops all printing services immediately. Active print |
| | requests do not complete. |
| | |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| nw start pserver | Starts host PSERVER processes. If the optional print |
| [password] | server password is specified, it overrides the |
| | password (if any) configured with SCONSOLE. (See |
| | PSERVER password below for more information.) |
| | |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| nw start rprinter | Starts the rprinter process. Use this command if the |
| | PSERVER process has been started, or if the configured |
| | PSERVER itself exists on a different NetWare Server. |
| | |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PSERVER Password
If you set a password for the PSERVER in PCONSOLE, you can do the
following:
* Configure the password in SCONSOLE. Then, you do not need to enter
the password on the command line when you start the PSERVER,or,
* Enter the password on the command line each time you start the
PSERVER.
If a password has been set in PCONSOLE and you do not configure it in
SCONSOLE, or omit it from the command line, the start PSERVER fails.
Problems
Make sure the client is logged into the server and the printer port and
print queue are configured. To check the client network printing setup,
use the NetWare command: CAPTURE SHOW.
Verify you have started the print services as outlined in the procedures
above.
If you are still having problems, reconfigure host printing:
1. First, stop the print services:
:nw stop print
2. Make sure you delete all the configurations. Following the steps
for configuring a host printer, make sure you delete both the
NetWare configuration and the NetWare host configuration in
SCONSOLE.
3. Reconfigure the printer following the steps previously described.
