Questions and Answers:

Q: What is FTP Surfer ?
A: FTP Surfer is a free professional FTP client featuring an Internet Explorer style user-interface, address bar, explorer history, favorites menu, multiple server connections, drag-and-drop, smart reconnect for unreliable connections, find-in-files, etc.

Q: Can I send or distribute copies of FTP Surfer to other people ?
A: You may freely copy the Software, only in its original distribution format and without modification. This includes distribution on magazine cover disks or CDs, newsgroups, forums, web-sites, ftp sites and by Internet Service Providers and other organizations. In no circumstances may you charge, or request donations, for any such copies. For full details please see our License Agreement.

Q: How can I edit files on an FTP site ?
A: FTP Surfer can use either the standard Windows Explorer file associations or custom associations to determine which application should be launched on the PC to edit a particular file. To edit a file, simply double-click the file in the list view or select the appropriate command from the File menu.

The file is then downloaded to the PC as binary (unless a filename pattern match is listed in the ASCII Files list in the Options dialog box) and the target application is started with the file a command line parameter.

FTP Surfer will then monitor the downloaded file. If any changes are detected, FTP Surfer will then prompt to upload the new file to replace the existing file on the server.

Q: Does FTP Surfer support Firewalls ?
A: FTP Surfer currently only support firewalls using the user@site authentication. If a user is prepared to work with us testing the software we will be happy to implement the required functionality for additional firewall types. Please contact surfer@whispertech.com for more information.

Q: The file listing displayed is not correct, what's wrong ?
A: FTP Surfer will work with the majority of Unix, DEC VAX/VMS, NetWare, DOS and Hewlett-Packard MPE/iX FTP servers. However if you experience a problem, try changing the Server Type property in the Server Profiles dialog box. If this does not resolve the problem, email the listing source (select Source from the View menu) along with the URL for the FTP site and directory to surfer@whispertech.com.

Q: Why doesn't my site profile show all directories ?
A: When creating an FTP site profile, all files and folders are displayed relative to the default login directory. For example, if the login directory for an FTP site is a subdirectory containing a small number of files, after connecting this is all FTP Surfer will display.

To change the default login directory, select Site Profiles from the Edit menu. From the list select the FTP site to configure, select the Connection tab and enter the starting directory in the Initial login directory field. The starting directory can be any path name, either relative to the default login directory or absolute. To ensure that all directories for a site profile are displayed, enter a forward slash, "/", in the Initial login directory field.

Q: How do I navigate to folders not displayed in the tree or list views ?
A: Using the explore folder feature you can determine a specific folder to open in the list view either relative to the current folder or using an absolute path prefixed by a forward slash. For example /demo/files. To use the explore folder feature, select Explore Folder from the Go menu.
