Testing Cable for 100VG-AnyLAN Installations
4-UTP 100VG-AnyLAN has the same cable test parameters as those required for
10Base-T and token ring. Cable test devices must be able to test these
parameters with the additional requirements of being able to test all four
pairs, at test frequencies up to 15 MHz.
Table 2 lists the cable test parameters and their acceptable ranges for
4-UTP 100VG-AnyLAN operation.
Several cable test devices are currently available that will test all four
pairs up to 20 MHz:
* The HP J2263A Cable Test Set
* The Microtest MT350 Scanner
* The Fluke 652 Cable Meter
* The Wavetek LANtech 10/100
Cable testing must be completed on the entire length of cable from the end
that attaches to the hub to the end that attaches to the node. Attenuation,
pair-to-pair and near-end crosstalk, and impedance tests must be completed
on all four pairs of the twisted-pair cabling. The near-end crosstalk test
must be completed from both ends of the cable. The remaining three tests may
be completed from only one end of the cable.
Table 2. 4-UTP Cable Test Parameters
| Frequency | 5 MHz | 10MHz | 15 MHz |
| Maximum Attenuation | 11.5 dB | 11.5 dB | 13.5 dB |
| Characteristic Impedance | 85 to 115 ohms | 85 to 115 ohms | 85 to 115 ohms |
| Pair-To-Pair Crosstalk | 30.5 dB | 26.0 dB | 22.5 dB |
| Near-end Crosstalk | 27.5 dB | 23.0 dB | 19.5 dB |
