In addition to the resolver file and the host name data base,
three other files are available to allow you to configure additional
information about your network. Each of these files is provided
in sample format in the NET.SYS
account. Each sample file contains an explanation of the format
for the data and a sample entry. The available files and their functions
are described as follows.
Network Name Database |
 |
The network name database, NETWORKS.NET.SYS,
associates IP addresses with official network names and aliases.
This allows the user to refer to a network by a symbolic name instead
of an internet address. To configure the network name database,
modify the sample file NETSAMP.NET.SYS.
Protocol Name Database |
 |
The protocol name database PROTOCOL.NET.SYS,
associates protocol numbers with official protocol names and aliases.
This allows the user to refer to a protocol by a symbolic name instead
of a number. The protocol number mappings are defined in RFC
1010 Assigned Numbers. To configure the protocol name
database, modify the sample file PROTSAMP.NET.SYS.
Service Name Database |
 |
The service name database, SERVICES.NET.SYS,
associates official service names and aliases with the port number
and protocol the services use. Reserved port numbers 0 through 255
are assigned by RFC 1010. To configure the service name database,
modify the sample file SERVSAMP.NET.SYS.
