COMMUNICATOR 3000/XL XL RELEASE 2.1
NetDelivery/XL Enhancements
by Aurora Filinich
Information Networks Division
New enhancements have been made to NetDelivery/XL, the product that
offers reliable transport of data and control information for customer
applications. These enhancements have expanded and improved the
security, flexibility and maintainability of the product. The following
describes these enhancements.
APPLICATION LEVEL SECURITY
The application-level security enhancement provides an additional level
of security beyond MPE logon security. It allows you to restrict who may
send to a queue and to further restrict queue receipts. A new
configuration entity called "Applications" has been created for this
feature. To implement it, you must enter application names, along with
their assigned queues, into an application registry. When you sign-on to
an application with a valid registered password, you will be able to send
and receive messages from the associated queues.
THE API HEADER ITEM
This enhancement provides the following benefits:
* Provides the application programmer with an interface to introduce
enhancements to customer application software. The programmer can
place any type of data that may be useful to the application.
NetDelivery will not interpret this data.
* Increases the flexibility of NetDelivery so that the application
designer can create or add new services to a customer application.
The API Header Item feature makes it possible to improve or expand a
customer application service, by creating a new area in the NetDelivery
message structure. The API Header has an area reserved exclusively for
customer applications. This new area will carry information which will
be accessed exclusively by the customer application.
NS/3000 INDEPENDENCE
It is now possible for NetDelivery/XL users to send messages when NS/3000
links and services are non-operational. If NS/3000 is stopped,
NetDelivery continues to receive messages from the customer's application
while NS is down. When NS/3000 is started again, NetDelivery sends all
messages to their local or remote destination.
DELIVERY AND NON-DELIVERY REPORTS
A customer application may request a delivery and non-delivery report
when sending a message. In contrast to the NetDelivery native reply,
which provides a "received and read" acknowledgment from the target
server, the delivery report provides a confirmation that the request has
been delivered to the queue. The delivery report requires no action on
the part of the server. In addition, an application may request only a
non-delivery report, which provides notification in the event of delivery
failure. This helps the customer to take immediate action.
COMMUNITY CONFIGURATION FILE COMPARISON DIAGNOSTICS
This feature provides the ability to report and repair any discrepancies
between nodes in the community-wide configuration. The new Compare
Configuration Request diagnostic analyzes the contents of configuration
files located on the nodes within a community and produces a report of
the discrepancies that exist between the files. When the repair option
of the diagnostic is selected, the system automatically updates the
records on the "suspect" node with current community-wide configuration
modifications as soon as the comparison has been completed.
The Configuration Discrepancy Report diagnostic, reports the status of a
comparison between configuration files which was completed at an earlier
time using the Compare Configuration Request diagnostic. Missing, extra,
or different records detected during the comparison will be listed on the
report.
