HPDesk NewWave Browsers

The HPDesk NewWave Browsers (HP 47950A) are available on MPE XL 2.0. The
Browsers allow HPDesk users to process messages received from NewWave
Mail which contain serialized NewWave Objects, such as NewWave Write
documents, and "attached" Gallery files. (Attached Gallery files exist
as individual objects on the NewWave Office). The Browsers function as
part of HPDeskManager.
NewWave Mail, in conjunction with HPDesk, gives NewWave users the ability
to send messages from their NewWave Office to users of AdvanceMail,
HPDesk, NewWave Mail, and foreign electronic mail systems (through
HPDesk's Foreign Service Connection, or Gateway Intrinsics). The item
mailed from NewWave contains an HPDesk-like Distribution List, and one of
the following items:
* A NewWave Text Note. This is transported in ASCII, and requires no
conversion or browsing function when it reaches HPDesk.
* A NewWave File Container. File Containers are used to transport DOS
files through NewWave Mail.
* A NewWave Object in serialized form, known as a NewWave Package.
This NewWave Package may contain (among other things) a NewWave Write
document, a Scanning Gallery Image, or a Graphics Gallery Drawing or
Chart.
If the item in question is mailed to another NewWave Mail user, then
HPDesk will only be used as the transport mechanism. When the target
person receives the message in their NewWave In Tray, they will be able
to process it. However, if the recipient is an HPDesk user, and the
message they receive falls into the third category above, they will
receive a message in their In Tray containing an HPDesk Distribution
List, and an item marked NewWave Package. The mechanism which allows the
HPDesk user to read, print, and/or convert the contents of NewWave
Packages is the HPDesk NewWave Browsers. Specifically, the HPDesk
NewWave Browsers give the HPDesk user the following additional
capabilities:
* The ability to read messages received in their In Tray containing
NewWave Packages, and have the text parts of NewWave Write documents
contained in the package displayed on the screen. Also, the HPDesk
user will receive a note on his screen if the NewWave Package
contains any Graphics or Scanning Gallery items.
* The ability to print a formatted copy of the NewWave Package to a
2680 or 2688 printer. Using this function, any attached Gallery
objects contained in the message will print on the printer. Text
portions of NewWave Write documents can also be printed this way, and
will appear as ASCII text on the printer.
* The ability to convert a NewWave Write document (contained in a
NewWave Package) to an HPDesk TEXT item. If the document contains
any Gallery items, they will be lost. Note that the item must be in
the user's Work Area to convert it.
* The NewWave Package can be converted, or "exploded" into an HPDesk
Package. This will result in each component of the NewWave Package
being broken down into an individual item within the HPDesk package.
Gallery files will then exist as individual entities, and the text
portions of NewWave Write documents will be converted into HPDesk
TEXT items. Each individual item can now be processed using existing
HPDesk functions (COPY to MPE file, etc.). From the point of view of
the HPDesk user, the existence of the HPDesk NewWave Browsers is
transparent.
