HP CD Extensions for MPE/iX Installation and Administration Guide

Chapter 1 Introduction

Overview

HP CD extensions for MPE/iX is a client-server application that expands
the capabilities of your HP 3000 system. With the extensions in place,
you can use HP LaserROM (or any DOS application) to access an HP 3000
CD-ROM drive. When the drive is not being read by HP LaserROM, you can use
it as a software update device with HPINSTAL/iX, the software
installation tool that lets you update your HP 3000 system from a CD-ROM
drive.

HP CD extensions lets you access an HP 3000 system CD-ROM drive over a
network. The client software includes a virtual device driver that sends
CD-ROM information requests over the network to the HP 3000 system. The
server software reads the data from the CD-ROM drive and sends the
requested data back over the network to the client PC, where it is read
as a normal MS-DOS file.

The HP CD extensions software also includes a utility called the Media
Manager. This utility is the administrative software for the extensions.
You can use the Media Manager to mount and dismount CD-ROM disks and to
monitor and disconnect client PCs.

The CD-ROM disks containing the MPE/iX software differ significantly from
the ISO-9660 disks used with HP LaserROM. HP CD extensions cannot
recognize the MPE/iX disks, so you can access these disks only from the
MPE/iX command line, using HPINSTAL/iX. Similarly, CD-ROM disks formatted
for the ISO-9660 (or High Sierra) standards required by HP LaserROM can
be mounted only with the Media Manager and accessed from the client PC.
You cannot access these disks from the MPE/iX command line.
