Appendix A Connecting and Configuring a CD-ROM Drive

Generally, connecting and configuring a CD-ROM drive involves the
following steps:

   * Determining where to install the CD-ROM drive

   * Using SYSGEN to configure the drive

   *   Connecting the drive

   *   Rebooting the system

To configure a CD-ROM drive:

   1. Determine where to attach the CD-ROM drive by identifying the
location of the HP-IB or SCSI card. Note that you can daisy-chain
an HP-IB CD-ROM onto an HP-IB tape drive or disk drive. You can
       also daisy-chain SCSI CD-ROM drives.

   2. Determine the device number (also called the HP-IB or SCSI
address) for the CD-ROM drive. (The number must be unique for the
cable to which it is attached.)

   3. Set the device number on the back of the CD-ROM drive.
For instructions on setting the device number, see the
       documentation for your CD-ROM drive.

   4. Logon to the system as MANAGER.SYS:

            :HELLO MANAGER.SYS

   5. Invoke the IO configurator in SYSGEN to modify the configuration:

            :SYSGEN
            sysgen>io

       Add the device:

            io> AD LDEV=ldev PATH=pathID=prod#

       where:

ldev is the logical device number of the CD-ROM drive.

path is the hardware path to the CD-ROM drive (e.g., 36.1.3
                 or 52.4).

prod# is the identification number of the CD-ROM drive (i.e.,
                 for HP-IB, HPC1707A; for SCSI, HPA1999A).

The configuration procedure varies slightly for HP-IB and SCSI
CD-ROM drives. Examples of both types of configuration are
provided here. Each example shows two drives being installed.

   6. Hold the changes you just made, exit from the IO configurator,
keep the new configuration, and exit from SYSGEN.

   7. Shut down the computer system:

            CtrlA
            =SHUTDOWN

When you see the message "SHUT 6," turn off the computer.

   8. Connect the CD-ROM drive to the card using the path you
       configured.

   9. Set the voltage selector switch, if necessary, on the back of the
       CD-ROM drive.

  10. If you are installing a SCSI CD-ROM drive, be sure that it is
       terminated.

  11. Turn on the CD-ROM drive.

  12. Turn on the computer and boot the system from the primary path.
The boot message varies depending on the system model.

If your system asks you to enter the boot path, enter the primary
       boot path.

If your system asks, "Boot from primary path?" respond Y.

Enter Y if the following prompt is displayed: Interact with IPL
       (or ISL)?

  13. Verify the I/O configuration using IOMAP:

            ISL>IOMAP

The system displays the I/O configuration for the system. You
need to check whether the CD-ROM drives have been configured
correctly by seeing whether MPE/iX recognizes them.

Examples of hardware configuration paths are shown below. The
paths for your drives are likely to have different values, but the
paths listed in your IOMAP output need to match those entered with
the AD command in the SYSGEN IO configurator.

                                     Type
            Path Component Name ID
            --------------------------------------
            52.3.0 CD-ROM Drive HPA1999A
            52.4.0 CD-ROM Drive HPA1999A

  14. Exit IOMAP. The following message is displayed:

Do you want to exit this program and return to ISL?Y

  15. Press Y, and then press Enter to exit the program and return to
       ISL.

  16. Start the system:

            :ISL>START NORECOVERY

  17. When the system starts up, if you have an ISO-9660 CD in the
drive, you may see a message from the volume management system
       (AVR):

VOLUME ON LDEV xx IS A DUPLICATE OF LDEV 1 (AVR 2)

where xx is the LDEV number you configured for the CD-ROM drive.
Ignore this message; it has no effect on the functionality of the
       system.

You can now use the CD-ROM drives on your system.
