HP SPT/XL User's Manual: Collection Software
Choosing a Program
HP SPT/XL allows you to monitor a program which is already executing, or
you can start the program from within HP SPT/XL. The program must be in
native mode, HP SPT/XL does not monitor programs in compatibility mode.
NOTE Because proper execution of HP SPT/XL depends on it running at a
higher priority than the monitored process, you may not monitor
processes running in the A-queue. Also, you should be careful in
monitoring processes running in the B-queue. HP SPT/XL will cause
the monitored process to use more CPU resources than usual, so
monitoring a process running in the B-queue could affect the
response time of other processes.
> Enter the Program to Monitor.
You can select the program to be monitored in several different ways:
* Enter the RUN command for the program
If the program is not currently executing you can start it from
within HP SPT/XL by using the run command at the Program to Monitor
prompt (for example: RUN HPOE;PARM=1;INFO="Order Entry"). Note that
you can also specify run command parameters just as you would in MPE.

NOTE Since HP SPT/XL allows you to enter MPE commands also, if you
enter a :RUN command (instead of a RUN command) HP SPT/XL will
pass this on to MPE and will not start data collection.

* Enter the Process Identification Number (PIN)
If the program is currently executing and you know the PIN you can
enter this number with the PIN command at the Program to Monitor
prompt (for example: PIN 123). One way you might already know the
PIN is in using HP GLANCE/XL, since it displays the PIN's for active
processes.
* Enter the program name
Entering the program name (for example: HPOE) at the Program to
Monitor prompt will display the process menu showing all active
instances of the program including PINs, job/session numbers, and
logons.

To choose an active program: Enter the PIN of the active process at the
PIN Number prompt.
To start a new process of the program as a son of the HP SPT/XL process:
Enter 0 or press Return at the PIN Number prompt.
Press Cancel to return to the collection menu without selecting a PIN.
