Using a Business Unit File
You can select a business unit file that you have created from the
Forecasts command NEXT dialog box.
The default file extension for a business unit file is .BUS. This can
only be overridden by typing the entire filename. Files with a different
extension will never appear in the list of possible business unit files.
Seasonality and the Business Unit File
It is important to remember that when you created a business unit file,
you built seasonality into both your historic and future values.
Seasonality is built into the business unit values you input into the
fourth field of the business unit file.
Because seasonality is built into your file, you do not want to include
it twice when you forecast. Therefore, when you do a forecast using the
Business Units trending method, change the Seasonality Level options on
the RXForecast Options command dialog box. Only seasonality levels lower
than the summarization level of your business unit file should be
included.
For example, suppose your business unit file is named SUMWEEK.BUS to
reflect the summarization level implicit in the second field.
SUMWEEK.BUS already has Week of Month seasonality in it. Therefore, you
would disable (uncheck) Week of Month seasonality and all higher
seasonality levels. Only Day of Week seasonality would be checked.
Also, Points Every Week should be enabled on the Forecasts command dialog
box.
NOTE Any seasonality that you request that is lower than the
summarization level will be removed by HP RXForecast if it is found
to be insignificant, assuming Auto Seasonality is enabled.
In summary, when you use the Business Units trending method, you must do
the following:
* Make changes on the RXForecast Options command dialog box.
* Change Seasonality Levels to eliminate all seasonality at
or higher than the summarization built into the business
unit file. Leave Auto Seasonality enabled.
* Change any other options as desired.
* Make selections on the Forecasts command dialog box.
* Select the business unit file from the list displayed on
the NEXT screen.
Once you select a business unit file, the Business Units
trending method is enabled.
* Select Business Units as the trending method.
* Select a metric that correlates to your business unit.
* Select a Points Every option that is appropriate for the
summarization built into your business unit file.
* Make sure the first date specified by the Dates option
corresponds approximately to the first date in the business
unit file.
* Change any other options as desired.
Business Units could prove to be the most useful trending method you use.
You will find it well worth the effort to build business unit files and
carefully apply the method.
