Print and Disc and Verification Diagnostics

The Verification Diagnostic checks version numbers on all program
components and the Print and Disc Diagnostic tests basic operation of the
HP 3000 printer and disc sharing operations.

The following sections describe each test. At the end of these
descriptions, Table 7-1 shows the commands you enter to run the tests.

Verification Test

The Verification Test ensures that all Resource Sharing files are present
in compatible versions. If you run the test using screens, a summary of
the results is displayed on the Test Results Screen. If you run the test
with commands, a list of components and version numbers found will be
displayed on the screen. If the Verification Test results in an error,
run the test again with commands to locate the incompatible module.

The command SPECIAL RESSHR 3 can be used to report only the summary of
results.

Error messages will be displayed if there are incompatible versions.

The files and components that are checked are:

                           File name                                    Module

Go/No Go Test

The Go/No Go Test performs four tests to determine if the printer and
disc functions of Resource Sharing will work.

The four tests are:

   *   General Environment Test
   * Creation and Access of Data File
   * Creation and Deletion of a Directory
   *   Printer Test

Using commands, the status of each test is displayed on the screen when
the test is complete. Using screens, a message is displayed on the Test
Results Screen to inform you of the overall results. If any of the four
subtests fail, a message will refer you to the file DIAGLIST in your
logon group and account for a Failure Analysis Summary.

This summary shows:

   * Date and time of the test
   * Name of the subtest that failed
   * Name of the procedure which reported the error
   *   Error reported
   *   Description of the failure

CHKDISC Test

The CHKDISC Test (also known as the Validation Test) checks and corrects
the structure and integrity of a shared disc.

NOTE CHKDISC checks only the shared disc for the group where you are currently logged on. If you are not currently logged on to the group containing the shared disc to be tested, log on to the appropriate group.
CHKDISC detects and corrects the following types of shared disc corruptions: * Files with Multiple Directory References. The second and subsequent directory entries pointing to the same file are removed. * Missing Files. Directory entries pointing to nonexistent files are removed. * Files without Directory Listings. Files without directory entries are brought into the root directory by creating entries in the form FILEnnnn.CHK, where nnnn is a sequential number starting with 0001. It also tries to fix any files that need to be merged. CHKDISC, when run using screens, directs error information to the file DIAGLIST. No output is shown on the screen. When you enter commands, the status of CHKDISC is displayed on the screen unless you direct it to DIAGLIST via a file equation. The output from CHKDISC includes three kinds of information: * Running Status indicates what operation CHKDISC is currently performing. * Error Status shows how many defects were found and lists the pathnames of files affected. Orphan file pathnames displayed are the ones created by CHKDISC in its adoption operations. * Statistics list the number of files on the disc after validation and corrections, the number of directories, the number of bytes in data files and the number of sectors allocated. Here's what a typical output from CHKDISC looks like: Checking Disc \BC\PUB Examining directory... Examining Group and Account... 6 defects found and corrected; files affected follows: Files with Multiple Directory References (the following files deleted): \MULTIREF\TEST1 \MULTIREF\TEST2 Missing Files (directory entry deleted): \MISSING\TEST1 Orphan Files (names assigned to files): \FILE0001.CHK \FILE0002.CHK \FILE0003.CHK CHKDISC Statistics: Total number of files 22 Total number of directories 3 Total number of bytes allocated 2033 Total number of sectors used 20 CHKDISC also checks the VDROOT file to ensure that if a failure occurred during Resource Manager Utility (RESMGR) backup/recovery, the VDROOT file is renamed properly. Table Utilization Test The Table Utilization Test provides a way to monitor the system limits you set for Resource Sharing in the CONFIG area of RESMGR. This test displays two data tables. The first table shows the current high, low and average uses, displaying both the number of uses and the percent usage relative to the limits you have configured. The second table shows the high-water usage measured from the last reboot of the system or the last RELEASE command issued.
NOTE The information displayed by running this test changes dynamically. That is, the data is an indicator only of the point in time that you run the test. If you run the test at measured intervals you'll get a better global picture of shared disc activity on your system.
Using screens, the Table Utilization Test directs a report to DIAGLIST. You can use a file equation to redirect the report. When you enter commands, the test results are directed to the screen. Here's a typical report: Current Configured Low Avg High Maximum Shared Discs 24 24.00% 24 24.00% 24 24.00% 100 100.% Connects 0 0.00% 2 7.69% 6 23.08% 26 100.% Open Files 0 0.00% 0 0.00% 0 0.00% 30 100.% Shared Files 0 0.00% 0 0.00% 0 0.00% 50 100.% Locked Files 0 0.00% 0 0.00% 0 0.00% 50 100.% High Water Configured Low Avg High Maximum Shared Discs 28 28.00% 28 28.00% 28 28.00% 100 100.% Connects 1 3.85% 2 7.69% 6 23.08% 26 100.% Open Files 0 0.00% 0 0.00% 3 10.00% 30 100.% Shared Files 0 0.00% 0 0.00% 3 6.00% 50 100.% Locked Files 0 0.00% 0 0.00% 0 0.00% 50 100.%
