Information Access Server: Database Administration
What Access Server Does
Access Server is the HP 3000-based data server in Information Access, an
information retrieval system that gives PC users access to PC databases,
IMAGE data, and file data on the host HP 3000.
The Database Administrator (DBA) controls which data is available through
Access Server. The DBA provides further security by specifying which
portion of that data each user can access. Access Server users are not
allowed to alter databases in any way, but they can overwrite files.
Information Access lets the PC user:
* Access local PC databases such as CONDOR, dBASE II, III, III+, and
IV, R:base 4000, 5000, and System V, R:base for DOS, Executive
Card Manager (ECM), Lotus 1-2-3, and Symphony.
* Access host IMAGE databases.
* Access remote IMAGE databases on networked HP 3000s no more than
one node away from the host.
* Access host KSAM, SD, BRW/IRF, or flat files.
* Access remote KSAM, SD, BRW/IRF, or flat files on networked HP
3000s no more than one node away from the host.
* Access IMSAM keys for use with Dynamic Information Systems
Corporation's OMNIDEX Information Management System.
NOTE To the PC user of Information Access, "remote" means anything that
is not on the PC itself, which includes the host HP 3000 and other
HP 3000s networked to the host HP 3000,
In this manual, use of the term "remote" indicates a networked HP
3000. It does not indicate the host HP 3000 except when the
reference is to a specific Access PC function label.
(See "Lesson 1: How Access PC and Access Server Work" in the
Information Access Server: Learning the Administrator Utility
manual for more information.)
* Combine information from data sources, regardless of their
location, while maintaining MPE and IMAGE security.
* Access non-relational IMAGE data as relational tables (tables with
rows and columns of data), a format familiar to most PC users.
* Select only the data needed for viewing and manipulation.
* Sort and summarize table information.
* Save and/or print the results of table manipulations, either on
the PC or host HP 3000.
* Upload tables created on the PC to the HP 3000.
* Abort long operations on the HP 3000 with a CANCEL command from
the PC. Status messages on the PC provide information about the
estimated time to completion.
* Initiate batch jobs from the PC and continue with other tasks
while the batch job executes on the host.
* Reformat result tables for use in popular PC applications.
Result tables can be downloaded directly to CONDOR, dBASE
II/III/III+/IV, R:base 4000/5000/System V, R:base for DOS, and ECM
databases.
They can be converted to DIF format for VisiCalc, to ASCII for
Microsoft(R) Word, Executive MemoMaker, and other PC word
processors, to WKS for Lotus 1-2-3, to WK1 for Symphony, or to QB
(Quoted Basic) for R:base, Lotus 1-2- 3, and custom applications.
* Reformat result tables for use in HP 3000 applications.
Result tables can be converted to DIF format for use in Deluxe
VisiCalc/3000, to SD (self-describing) format for HP Listkeeper,
DSG/3000, and HP EasyChart, to ASCII format for HP Word, TDP/3000,
and other HP 3000 editors, or to BRW/IRF files for use with
Business Report Writer.
They also can be converted to binary or ASCII data files for
custom applications.
