Information Access Server: System Management
Personal Computer Requirements
All personal computers on the Access Server network must meet the
specifications listed below. Requirements specific to different makes
and models of personal computers are listed under the appropriate heading
below.
CAUTION If you run Access PC on a PC that is also serving as the system
console, do not try to access Remote Tables. Because the string
of characters equivalent to a CTRL B can occur, your system is
likely to be put into maintenance mode.
Each PC on the Access Server network should meet these requirements:
* The PC must be an HP Vectra, a supported IBM PC, or a supported
Compaq PC. Table 2-1 lists supported PCs.
* The number of personal computers you plan for the network should
be appropriate for your HP 3000 system configuration.
* The minimum personal computer memory required is 512Kb for basic
serial connections, 640Kb for HP OfficeShare networking, and you
need at least 1Mb of expanded memory to work with Microsoft
Windows.
* Each PC must have an RS-232/422 interface or a LAN interface.
Table 2-1 on the next page lists the personal computers that are
supported on the Access Server network.

(1) ThinLAN and StarLAN not supported.
(2) Needs 1 Mbyte EMS expanded memory.
(3) Needs Microsoft Windows and 4Mb memory
For HP Vectra, Supported IBM PCs, and Supported Compaq and PCs
Each HP Vectra (or supported IBM and Compaq PCs) running Access PC needs
the following:
* Each PC must have at least one 20 Mbyte hard disc drive and one
flexible disc drive.
* Be sure your HP Vectra, supported IBM PC, or supported Compaq PC
configuration includes an RS-232/422 or LAN card for the HP 3000
interface. Your HP representative has a list of all compatible
connector cards.
* If you are not using a LAN connection, set the baud rate to 9600
or 19200 (for a hardwired connection) or to the appropriate baud
rate if using a modem. Also, set the port specification to the
port designated for the host connection. You can set these
parameters through the Change Connection screen in Access PC or
use basic serial connection file commands. If baud and port
parameters are unspecified, Information Access uses the default
values of 9600 baud and port`1.
* To communicate with a series 9XX HP 3000 via a DTC, the HP Vectra
requires version A.03.00 or later of the Access PC software.
NOTE For HP Vectra users who are using an existing logon in a basic
serial environment, the baud rate, port (Serial 1 or Serial 2), and
parity set in AdvanceLink, a connection file, or a terminal
emulator, must match the baud rate and port (COM1 or COM2) set in
Information Access and the parity (None or Zeros) used by
Information Access. If any of these three do not match, the user
will get a Host is not responding error message.
Access PC Software
Access PC communicates with Access Server on the host. For basic serial
connections, Access PC requires MS-DOS (R) version 2.11 or later; for HP
OfficeShare networking, version 3.10 or later is required. Access PC
software includes:
* Software procedures that allow communication between processes,
providing a data transfer path between the PC and the host.
* Method files, which are programmatic procedures Access PC uses to
support dBASE II, III, III+, and IV, CONDOR, R:base 4000, 5000,
and System V, R:base for DOS, Lotus 1-2-3, Symphony, ECM, and
various data sources on HP`3000s. The method files define
formatting and translation procedures for Access PC, and allow
users to convert one table to another for joining data from data
sources with different formats.
For example, a CONDOR table must be converted to a dBASE IV table
before it can be joined with a dBASE IV table. Joining a CONDOR
table and a dBASE IV table directly causes an error.
Method files are identified by the MS-DOS file name extension
.MTH.
HP OfficeShare Software
If you use the HP OfficeShare networking environment, the HP OfficeShare
network PC software must be installed on the PC.
The program USRLOAD must be run before running Access PC to establish the
proper PC-to-host connection. You may be able to automate this process
by setting up the PC to run USRLOAD from an AUTOEXEC.BAT file. For
details, please see the HP OfficeShare documentation.
Microsoft Windows
You need MS-DOS 3.1 or later and at least 1 megabyte of expanded memory
(EMS) to use Microsoft Windows (Version 2.11) with Access PC. Windows
2.11 supports the use of up to 32Kb EMS. Users can simultaneously run
Windows applications while using Access PC.
HP NewWave Environment
If you are running Access PC in the HP NewWave environment, you must have
Microsoft Windows installed on your PC. HP NewWave requires a minimum of
2Mb memory (4Mb recommended) with expanded memory (LIM 4.0). (See the HP
NewWave Installation Manual for additional requirements.)
