Information Access Server: System Management

HP 3000 Requirements

Access Server runs on HP 3000 Series 3X through 7X computers using
Advanced Terminal Processors (ATP) ATP/37 or ATP/M, and Series 9XX
computers using DTCs (Data Terminal Controllers) over a direct or modem
connection or LANICs over a LAN connection. Minimum memory and disc
storage requirements are shown below.

NOTE Capacity planning services are available from Hewlett-Packard to help you gauge the impact of Access Server on your system.
Hardware Requirements Hardware Requirements. Be sure your system meets these requirements before you install Access Server: Minimum memory. Systems running Access Server on MPE/V require a minimum of two megabytes of memory. In an HP OfficeShare environment, four megabytes or more are strongly recommended. Systems running Access Server on MPE/XL require a minimum of 24 megabytes of memory. Microcode. MPE/V CST expansion microcode is required. (Not applicable to Series 9XX.) Disc Space Required on MPE/V. When you install Access Server on MPE/V, the base product uses about 20,000 disc sectors for its permanent files. Another 6,000 sectors are used for temporary installation files. The Information Access data dictionary has a default size of about 13,000 sectors: 9,500 for HDPDIC, and 2,800 for HDPENV. (The DBA can alter the default data dictionary capacities.) We recommend that you allow at least 30,000 to 40,000 extra sectors to provide space for saved tables and work files (particularly when large tables are involved) in addition to the disc space used by the software. Disc Space Required on MPE/XL. When you install Access Server on MPE/XL, the base product uses about 32,000 disc sectors for its permanent files. Another 6,000 sectors are used for temporary installation files. The Information Access data dictionary has a default size of 13,000 sectors: 9,500 for HDPDIC, and 2,800 for HDPENV. (The DBA can alter the default data dictionary capacities.) We recommend that you allow at least 30,000 to 40,000 extra sectors to provide space for saved tables and work files (particularly when large tables are involved) in addition to the disc space used by the software. Hardware Limitations Hardware Limitations. Keep in mind the following hardware limitations when installing and using Access Server: Remote HP 3000s. Remote HP 3000s must be located no more than one logical node away from the host. Terminals. Only terminals that support V/3000 can be used to run the utilities. Moreover, because the utilities are heavily dependent on the use of function labels, we strongly recommend that they be run only on terminals that display function labels. The HP 2624B terminal with Rev A firmware should never be used to run the Administrator and Translator Utilities. The utilities use portions of V/3000 which do not work with the Rev A firmware on the HP 2624B. Data Switches and Terminal Multiplexers. Access Server supports the HP 2334A, HP 2334A Plus, and HP 2335 multiplexers. (See "X.25 Support," below.) Other terminal multiplexers and data switches may work but are not supported by HP for use with Information Access. Any problem found in a non-supported datacomm environment must be verified in a supported environment before HP can be consulted concerning the problem. X.25 Support The following PC-to-host connections through HP 2334A, HP 2334A Plus, and HP 2335 multiplexers are supported for basic serial connections. * Statistical Multiplexer Configuration. This configuration consists of back-to-back HP 2334A, HP 2334A Plus, or HP 2335 multiplexers, and is supported over a leased, private, or dial-up line. Connections through certified X.25 packet switching networks are also supported. On Series 3X through 7X systems, the connection is to an ATP. On Series 9XX systems, the connection is to a DTC. Note that on Series 9XX systems, only the HP 2334A Plus is supported. * Cluster Controller Configuration. This configuration consists of a synchronous link between an HP 2334A, HP 2334A Plus, or HP 2335 multiplexer and an INP on a Series 3X through 7X system. Connections are supported over leased, private, or dial-up lines. Support for certified X.25 packet switching networks can be obtained for this configuration by performing local testing. Contact your HP representative for details. Note that the cluster controller configuration is not supported on Series 9XX systems. For a list of certified X.25 packet switching networks, see the data sheet for the HP 2334A, HP 2334A Plus, and HP 2335 multiplexers. Figure 2-1 on the next page depicts supported configurations for PC-to-host connections.

Figure 2-1. Supported PC-to-Host Configurations Because Access Server will translate control characters to non-control values, there are no special profile configuration requirements for the HP 2334A, HP 2334A Plus, or HP 2335. Any HP 2334A/HP 2334A Plus/HP 2335 profile that supports a standard MPE session will function properly with Information Access. PC users using X.25 should be aware of the following: * To connect to Access Server, they must have AdvanceLink, a terminal emulator, or use connection files to get the MPE colon prompt and establish their remote session. (The one exception: If HP 2334A, HP 2334A Plus, or HP 2335 multiplexers are back-to-back over a dedicated line, they can be configured so that the PC-to-host connection looks like a direct connection. For details, see the HP`2334A/HP`2334A Plus/HP`2335 documentation.) Software Requirements Access Server uses the following software on the HP 3000 Series 3X through 7X and 9XX computers: * The IMAGE database management system. * The MPE/V (version G.03.03 or later) or MPE/XL (version A.03.00 or later) MIT. This MIT release includes compatible versions of V/3000 (the utility that supports view screens) and PCSERVER.PUB.SYS (the HP 3000 datacomm software for products using basic serial connections). * The Pascal runtime library. * HP OfficeShare LAN/3000 software if HP OfficeShare networking is used. Remote 3000 Link. If you're using the Remote 3000 Link, NS/3000 networking software must be installed on the host and remote HP 3000s. Remote HP 3000s can be located no more than one logical node away from the host. MPE Configuration. When you configure MPE for Access Server, consider these criteria: * When running under basic serial software, configure ports from which Information Access will run as terminal type 10. The datacomm software expects transmissions to be from a terminal type 10, and, over a modem, could time out on a transmission from a port specified as something other than type 10. * Consider enabling disc caching on HP 3000 systems that support it, based on your system I/O and CPU load pattern. * As with any new product installation, review the system table configuration and make any necessary adjustments. (Guidelines are given in Chapter 4.)
