Setting Up and Maintaining Your System The Installation Guide

Setting Up Your Terminals and Printers

Terminals and printers are connected to the computer through the HP 2340A
data communications and terminal controller (DTC). If you have a DTC, you
must perform the activities described here. If you do not have a DTC,
proceed to "Setting Up Additional Software Products," found later in this
chapter.

To get your terminals and printers to communicate to the system

Once you have connected the appropriate cables from your system to the
DTC as described in Chapter 2, "Unpacking and Installing Your Computer,"
you must tell the system where to look for the DTC. This location is
known as the DTC station address (the label on the back of the DTC will
say LAN address). You must input each LAN address that you wrote down in
Chapter 2, into the system.

To tell your system the DTC station address

Once you know the DTC station address (shown on the DTC label as a LAN
address), you must supply the address information to the system before
you turn on the DTC. The tool that enables you to do this is called the
node management services configuration manager (referred to as NMMGR).

Use the following steps to tell the system the DTC station address of the
DTC. You must perform these steps from MANAGER.SYS.

   1. At the system prompt (:), type the following command to start
       NMMGR:

              : NMMGR Return

The system displays a screen similar to the following. At the top
of the screen, see the title Open Configuration/Directory File.
This is the first screen that you see of the NMMGR interface. You
do not need to enter any information on this screen.

Figure 10-1. Open Configuration/Directory File Screen On the bottom of the screen, see the labeled keys (known as softkeys). These keys represent the function keys (F keys) found on your keyboard. 2. Press F3 to move to the Quick Configuration screen. At the top of this screen, see the title Quick Configuration Confirmation. This screen asks whether you are sure that you want to continue. You do.
[]
Figure 10-2. Quick Configuration Confirmation Screen 3. Press F1 to continue to the Quick DTC Configuration screen (as shown in the title at the top of the screen).
[]
Figure 10-3. Quick DTC Configuration Screen 4. See the title Quick DTC Configuration at the top of your screen. Look for a cursor in the field labeled DTC number. The DTC number is an easy way for you to identify the DTC. If you have only one DTC or if this is the first DTC that you are supplying an address to, you just need to press the Tab key to move to the next field labeled DTC station address. After the cursor moves to the field labeled DTC station address, notice that an address is already in the field as a placeholder address. This is not the address that you will use. 5. Type in the DTC (LAN) station address, including the hyphens after each pair of numbers, that you recorded earlier from the label found on the back of the DTC. Use the cursor control keys to reposition the cursor within the station address if you make an error. Then type over the mistyped address. 6. Press F6 (the Save Data softkey) to save the LAN address that you have just typed in. Check the message line at the top of the screen to verify that the data has been saved. 7. Press F2 (the Validate Config softkey) to instruct the computer to validate the information you have just supplied. Look for a verification message found under the title line at the top of the screen to tell you when the validation process is completed successfully. The message says Validation completed: configuration of the selected subsystem is valid. If the validation process was not completed successfully, you see the message Validation not successful printed on the message line at the top of the screen. If this message appears, do the following: * Check to make sure that you typed the information correctly. * Retype the information, if it was typed incorrectly. * Save the data again by pressing F6. * Validate the data by pressing F2. * Check the message line at the top of the screen to verify that there are no error messages. This program allows you to configure a maximum of three DTCs. If you have one DTC, simply enter the configuration data for that DTC and ignore any further prompts requesting the addition of more DTCs. Go to step 8 for instructions on exiting NMMGR. If you have more than one DTC, return to step 4 and type 2 in the DTC number field for the second DTC (type 3 in the DTC number field for the third DTC). Repeat the procedure in steps 5 through 7 for each additional DTC, before you leave NMMGR. 8. When you have no more DTC (LAN) addresses to process, you are ready to leave NMMGR. Press F8 (the Exit softkey) to leave NMMGR and return to the system prompt (:). To keep your configuration changes and perform a final validation To ensure that no conflicts exist between the information supplied in NMMGR and the information found in the system configuration file, you must cross-validate your configuration. 1. At the prompt, type the following to get into SYSGEN to perform the final validation: : SYSGEN Return sysgen> io Return io> HOLD Return io> EXIT Return sysgen> KEEP CONFIG Return Purge old configuration (YES/NO)? YES Return Keep configuration anyway (YES/NO)? YES Return Because of these steps that you just performed, when you start the system next time, you need only to type the START NORECOVERY command at the ISL prompt. Refer to "System Startup" in Chapter 6 of Using Your System (A1707-92002) for instructions. 2. To return to the system prompt (:), when the sysgen> prompt reappears, type: sysgen> EXIT Return The system prompt (:) should reappear. 3. It is necessary to reboot your system for it to recognize the station address(es) that you have provided. This procedure is needed to bring new equipment into the system's configuration file. Enter the following commands to reboot the system. a. Shut down the system by pressing the Ctrl and A keys simultaneously and then typing the following command at the prompt (=): : Ctrl A = SHUTDOWN Return Note that the shutdown process could take more than 10 minutes, depending on what processes were running at the time. Several shutdown messages flash on the screen during this shutdown process. Some messages contain the phrase SHUT nn. The numbers at the end of the phrase do not appear in sequence and might vary with each shutdown. b. Wait until you see the phrase SHUT 6, signifying that the shutdown process is complete. c. Reset the system by pressing the Ctrl and B keys simultaneously and then typing the following command at the prompt (CM>): Ctrl B CM> RS Return 4. Type Y to respond to the questions to confirm a restart, to boot from primary boot path, and to interact with IPL as you did in the end of Chapter 3, "Starting the Computer System." This confirms your intention to perform a restart. 5. The computer system now starts the process of loading the IPL software. Once the system reboots, you see the ISL prompt (ISL>). Type the following command at the prompt: ISL> START NORECOVERY This step ensures that the configuration takes effect. After you have rebooted the system and turned on the DTC(s), you are ready to perform the final steps to make your printers and terminals work. If you want to change the default terminal and printer configuration, refer to Chapter 6, "Customizing Your Terminal and Printer Configuration." 6. A welcome message appears. Read it, and follow the instructions to get to the system prompt. ________________________________________________________________________ | | | | | **************************************************** | | WELCOME ! | | **************************************************** | | YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY STARTED YOUR SYSTEM | | | | The console is now logged on and ready. | | If you do not see a prompt (:), press RETURN | | | ________________________________________________________________________ 7. When the system prompt appears, type SHOWME to make sure that you are logged on to MANAGER.SYS. Then type the following: :SPOOLER LP;START :STREAMS 10 :OUTFENCE 7 8. If your DTC(s) is currently on, turn off the DTC(s) by pressing the DTC(s) power switch, located in the lower left corner of the front panel to OFF (wait three seconds), and then press again to turn it back on. If your DTC(s) is currently off, just press the power switch to turn it on. When the console screen has displayed a message that the DTC(s) has downloaded and the green light on the DTC(s) front panel has stopped flashing, you are ready to use the system. If the green light on the DTC continues flashing after five minutes, check to make sure that the correct DTC station address was entered into NMMGR as described in Chapter 6, "Customizing Your Terminal and Printer Configuration." Also check that the cabling is properly connected.
