Using Your System The User's Guide

About Your Documentation 

The guide that you are reading now is the complete user's guide for your
Series 9X7LX system.  This guide describes how to use the system.  Three
chapters explain how to use the system by using the HP Easytime/iX menus.
The later chapters explain how to use the system by entering commands
directly.

Using Your System 

This user's guide explains step-by-step procedures for all tasks, an
overview of basic skills needed to use the computer effectively, and a
glossary of terms and definitions.  It focuses on two ways of using the
system.  Chapters 2, 3, and 4 refer to using HP Easytime/iX. Chapters 5,
6, and 7 refer to using MPE/iX commands directly.

Introducing Your System         Describes the two main ways of using your
                                system.  It also explains how this manual
                                is organized.

Getting Started with HP         Describes how to start HP Easytime/iX and
Easytime/iX                     the basic skills that you need to use the
                                menus effectively.  If you are new to the
                                HP 3000, use this chapter first.

Performing Tasks Using HP       Describes many of the tasks that you need
Easytime/iX                     to monitor and manage printing, files,
                                jobs, sessions, console messages, and
                                backups on your system.

HP Easytime/iX Reference        Provides information about console
                                messages and requests, error messages,
                                function keys, wildcard character sets,
                                and field definitions for each HP
                                Easytime/iX screen.

Learning to Use MPE/iX          Provides practice in using MPE/iX
Commands                        commands instead of the HP Easytime/iX
                                menus.  It includes learning how to use
                                the editor, which allows you to create
                                text files.

Performing Tasks Using MPE/iX   Gives procedures for the tasks that you

                                MPE/iX commands.

MPE/iX Commands Reference       Alphabetically lists descriptions of
                                commonly used MPE/iX commands.  Use this
                                chapter to get more detail on commands
                                that you learn in chapters 5 and 6.

Log.  Your documentation set also includes online help systems and quick
reference cards.  Other manuals for tape drives, printers, and terminals
are specific to those devices and ship with the device.

The online Help Facility 

MPE/iX provides an extensive online Help Facility that includes a
description of every MPE/iX command, its parameters, and an example of
its use.

Setting Up and Maintaining Your System 

Use this installation guide for setting up your computer and its
connecting pieces, and for starting the software.  It includes
information on maintaining your built-in tape drive.

Understanding Your System 

Sit back and read about the concepts that make the system run.  Use this
to get familiar with your new computer or to deepen your knowledge of
computer concepts.

The quick reference cards 

HP Easytime/iX Quick      This card provides a brief reference for

MPE/iX Day-to-Day Tasks   This quick reference for MPE/iX guides you in
                          finding the commands that you might use most
                          often.

Preparing Additional Software Products for Use 

This short document is a supplement to the Setting Up and Maintaining
Your System installation guide.  It provides instructions for completing
the installation process for HP software products that you purchased with
the system.  Even when these products come installed on the system, they
may require steps to prepare them for use.  Look in this supplement to
see which products include HP installation services and which you can
prepare for use.

Customer Computer Support Log 

This record-keeping binder gives you and HP support personnel a place to
log information about your system.  Keep this binder beside your system
so that it is always available.
