HP Predictive Support User's Guide For HP 3000 Series 900
Features
The psconfig Interface
psconfig is a menu-driven, interactive interface through which you
configure information central to the operation of HP Predictive Support.
The types of information configured through psconfig include system and
site information (such as system serial and model numbers), file transfer
information (such as the HP Response Center phone number), and peripheral
device and memory coverage information.
You can also perform the following tasks through psconfig:
* Start or stop a run of HP Predictive Support.
* Initiate file transfer activity independent of a Predictive run.
* Specify an HP Predictive Support run schedule.
* Print reports and configure their frequency and output
destination.
NOTE Other tasks, like reconfiguring utilities, configuring code word,
resetting event data, and sending messages to the HP Response
Center, are related to preventive maintenance or problem resolution
conditions. They should be performed only when recommended.
Online Help
Use the online help in psconfig for help and further information on these
tasks. You can reach Help when you initially access psconfig or from any
psconfig Menu by typing h and pressing Return. psconfig displays the
Main Help Menu.
Automatic Scheduler
psconfig comes with an Automatic Scheduler (detailed in Chapter 4) that
can automatically run HP Predictive Support on a daily basis. If HP
Predictive Support is to run through the automatic scheduler, the
scheduler needs to be set to on, and the timing of runs possibly changed.
Rulesets: Updates and Downloads
HP Predictive Support analyzes internal error logs on disk drives, system
log files, and memory logs for error rates. When an error rate exceeds
its threshold, an event is generated. Rulesets determine thresholds.
Occasionally, ruleset updates are created and downloaded (transmitted) by
the HP Response Center to HP Predictive Support. These downloads occur
infrequently and are the result of either of the following:
* The ruleset for a given device is enhanced.
* A device is added to the group of devices supported by HP
Predictive Support.
The next time a system administrator or HP Predictive Support establishes
a file transfer connection to the HP Response Center, a ruleset download
occurs. This download happens after uploads from HP Predictive Support
at the customer site are received.
NOTE The HP Response Center does not independently establish contact
with the customer's system. Only HP Predictive Support at the
customer site initiates transfer connections and allows downloads
from the HP Response Center to occur.
Code Word
HP Predictive Support uses a code word that enables it to run on the
system for the duration of the support contract. The HP Response Center
transmits the code word to the system as part of the installation of HP
Predictive Support. When the code word expires, HP Predictive Support
continues to run. On the fiftieth day after expiration and periodically
thereafter, it submits a request to the HP Response Center for a new code
word. The fifty day period allows time for contract renewal and
processing. Upon receipt of the new code word from the HP Response
Center, HP Predictive Support coverage is ensured for the duration of the
support contract.
Reports
There are five reports associated with HP Predictive Support. You can
print these reports interactively from psconfig or through a psconfig
command issued at the system prompt.
The five reports are:
* Action Summary Report, which lists messages sent to the system
console or the HP Response Center during an HP Predictive Support
run.
* Configuration Report, which lists all of the information that has
been configured through psconfig.
* Trace Report, which provides an audit trail (progress and
debugging messages) of recent HP Predictive Support runs.
* Versions Report, which lists the current versions of the HP
Predictive Support rulesets.
* PSCONFIG Log Report, which provides an audit trail of each
activity performed in psconfig as well as psconfig internal error
information.
