HP DeskManager Customization
How Help can be Accessed by Users
The text of the HP Desk help system is based on the information in the
manual HP DeskManager User Reference Guide. The help system can be
accessed by users in a number of ways, which are explained below.
Help Command
A user can type the HELP command without specifying a topic, to access
the help system via menus. This allows a user to browse the help
information--for instance to find out about areas other than the one they
are in. From the help Main Menu, all the help information can be
accessed via a series of lower-level menus.
From any help menu, the Print Page function key allows a user to print
all the current help page--not just the part of that page displayed on
the screen--to the printer defined in their User Profile.
You could use this feature to print a selection of help pages to form a
quick reference guide for users who don't have manuals of their own, if
you wish.
HP Desk Prompt
At the HP Desk prompt a user can enter keywords (which may be either
Hewlett-Packard or user installed) to access the help system, as shown
below:
HELP command
for example:
HELP CREATE
or
HELP area
for example:
HELP INTRAY
This approach gives help on the specified topic by entering the keyword.
In the first case, help is displayed on the specified command. If that
command cannot be executed in the area that the user is in, the help
system informs the user and directs them to an area where the command is
valid. In the second case, help is displayed on the commands available
in that area of HP Desk. A quick way of asking for general help for an
area is just to type ? at the command prompt.
Context Help Key
A user can hit the Suspend and then Context Help function keys at any
time, whether at the HP Desk prompt or within a command. Help is then
displayed for the command that was suspended or, if the user was not
using a command, the help Main Menu is displayed, providing the
opportunity to browse all the help information.
Another Application
If you are running another application as a son of HP Desk, then you can
access HP Desk help pages from within that application. Therefore, there
is no need for you to design a help system for that application, you can
simply add the application's help pages into HP Desk's help system. See
Chapter 11 for more information.
Script Files
If you are running a script file, you can also access particular help
pages from within the script file using the &HELP directive. See Chapter
9 for more information.
Initial Introductory Help
When a user enters any area of HP Desk, the user can see the commands
that are available in that area. This is a configurable option within
the Profile. See the section "Tailoring Initial Introductory Help" .
