Database Backups
You should regularly back up your HP Desk databases and associated files
to tape as a safety measure against system failure or hardware faults
(for example a disk crash). The frequency at which this is done will be
determined by your working practices, but ideally this should be at least
once a day to ensure minimal loss of data in the event of failure.
If you have standard HP Desk then the Mailmaint job provides a means to
do this, however you can remove the store phase from Mailmaint if you
perform system backups.
If you have HP DeskManagerPLUS and you utilize the Garbage Collector in
conjunction with a weekly Mailmaint, then the Mailmaint store is
inappropriate and must be replaced by a more frequent backup.
Backing up HP Desk files
If you need to make a backup copy of just the HP Desk databases and other
files, and without running Mailmaint, use the MAILSTORE command. This
allows you to to make backup copies as many times a day as you need
without having to run the Maintenance job.
NOTE The MAILSTORE command is not a substitute for the Mailmaint
command. While the former only provides a backup copy of your
databases, it does not perform any of the maintenance tasks
necessary to keep your HP Desk system running efficiently.

How to backup your databases:

1. Load the backup tape on the tape drive.

2. Type MAILSTORE.

3. Reply to the console message asking you to load a tape.

4. Load additional tapes if necessary.
________________________________________________________________________
This procedure stores the HP Desk databases to tape. The time and date
of the store is recorded in the Supervisor management file. Once the
backup is completed, restart HP Desk in the usual way.
The time and date of the store can be displayed by the
MAILRESTORE and MAILSTATUS commands.
NOTE If you are using EFT/FSC as part of your HP Desk system and have
stored the messages files anywhere other than in the HPMAIL group
of the HPOFFICE account, you cannot store them using the MAILSTORE
command. If you want to store them, you will have to use the MPE
STORE command. This also applies to incoming HP Desk Intrinsics
Transaction Files.
Restoring HP Desk Files
If for some reason your databases have become corrupted, perhaps due to
system failure or hardware fault, you must replace these files with the
most recent backup copy.
Once the databases and associated data files have been restored and HP
Desk is running again, it is a good idea to tell your users what has
happened and inform them that any files created since the last time you
ran the Maintenance job or restored the databases will have been lost.
If you have made any configuration changes (adding, deleting, or
modifying users, locations, and so on) since the last time you stored the
databases, you will have to do that work again.

How to restore your databases:

1. Load the tape containing the backup copy of the databases on
the tape drive.

2. Type MAILRESTORE. This command shuts down HP Desk and then
restores the databases.

3. Reply to the console message asking you to load a tape.
________________________________________________________________________
The database restore is controlled by a file called RESTLIST.MAILLIB. All
of the files to be restored are listed in this file.
The IMAGE databases are held as several privileged MPE files. When you
restore them, it is essential that they are restored from the same backup
tape set.
NOTE The MAILRESTORE command does not restore EFT/FSC files, even if
they are in the HPMAIL group of the HPOFFICE account. These files
must be restored using the MPE RESTORE command.
Once the databases have been successfully restored, you must run the
Maintenance job. Only after you have done this should you restart HP
Desk.
