HP DeskManager Administration
Methods of Applying Updates
There are a number of different ways in which you can make changes to
your own Directory and in which you can inform other computers of these
changes if you are part of a large network. The methods you can use are
detailed below, together with examples of when you might use them.
NOTE Before you update the Directory, make sure that there is enough
space left in the databases to accommodate any additions. For
example, if the LOCAL-USER dataset is approaching full capacity,
you might not be able to add all of the new users you want to.
Check the Local and Global (and Native if applicable) Data Set Summary
Reports to see if any of the datasets are getting full. If they are
expand the database before attempting to make significant additions to
the Directory.
Local Updates
The Configurator Used for one-off changes such as adding a
single user or unusual changes which involve a
number of associated transactions, such as
adding a remote computer, configuring a route
to it, and so on.
Batch Configurator Used for large-scale changes, such as adding a
sublocation and all of its users.
Mailutil Used for simple one-off changes, such as
changing a user's name.
The Directory Update Used in local networks where the same batch
facility (*ADMIN) configuration file has to be applied to a
number of machines.
Network Updates
The Directory Update Used for major updates where a batch
facility configuration file can be applied automatically
to the recipient HP Desk system.
Mailutil Used for major updates to systems which do not
want to have changes applied using the
Directory Update facility.
The method you use for remote updates will depend on the preference of
the recipient HP Desk system. For a high degree of security, the HP Desk
Administrator might want to receive a batch configurator file rather than
using the Directory Update facility.
Sequenced Updates
Sequenced Directory Updates are a set of tools which can be used to
automate the distribution of Directory updates within an HP Desk network.
These tools can be used for either:
* Automatic reporting of Directory changes to a central location
* Automatic updating of HP Desk Directories within a local cluster
of HP Desk systems.
Transferring Users
The final type of update you might have to perform involves the movement
of staff from one part of your organization to another. For example, due
to a reorganization a department might be moved from one HP Desk location
to another. This new location could be on a completely different
computer, perhaps in another country.
This type of change would require using Mailutil to store details of the
users in question and restore them at their new location.
NOTE If you transfer user information from a computer with a Native
Database installed to one with no Native Database, any native user
names and language IDs included will be ignored by the receiving
computer.
