Batch Versus On-line Configuration
There are two main methods of updating the Directory: online or batch.
Online updates are made interactively. The advantage of this method is
that the changes are checked as they are made so you can't add users to
an unconfigured sublocation. The disadvantage is that the changes must
be made one at a time which can be a slow and laborious job if you have a
large number to perform.
Batch updates are put into a file which is applied at a later date. The
advantage of this method is that large numbers of individual changes can
be collected together and then applied together. The disadvantage is
that the changes are not checked for context until the file is applied so
you can try to add users to a sublocation before you add the sublocation
itself and you are not told this is impossible until after the file has
been applied.
Batch updates are usually more convenient than online updates for:
* Bulk configuration, such as of aliases in the Directory of a
gateway computer.
* Changes which will be made to more than one computer. For
example, updates to a local network.
Batch configuration is also the method used by the Directory
Update facility, which enables you to automatically update the
Directories of remote computers.
