HP DeskManager Administration

The HP Desk Administrator

A new HP Desk Administrator should start with:

   * Knowledge of HP Desk from the user's viewpoint, as explained in
the manual HP DeskManager User Reference Guide. Ideally an
Administrator should be a user of HP Desk, with at least six
months experience, who is confident in performing most operations.

   * Experience of the HP 3000 to System Manager level, being fully
       conversant with MPE.

   * Personal qualities that are needed to manage an HP Desk
installation effectively. The most important of these are the
       abilities to:

          * Work well with others--be they users or other
              Administrators.

          * Communicate effectively, often complex and detailed
              information.

          * Understand the needs and objectives of your organization.

          * Help users out of everyday problems by devising and
              explaining successful solutions.

Administration Training

New Administrators should prepare for their responsibilities by reading
through the chapters of this manual that are relevant to their
installation before they attempt to perform any administration task.

The HP DeskManager Administration Training course, available from
Hewlett-Packard, provides the opportunity to learn more about
administration tasks and provide the opportunity to develop your skills
in a practice environment.

Delegating Administration Tasks

In some cases, you may choose to delegate some administration tasks to
other people in your organization. The responsibilities you choose to
delegate will depend on the needs of your organization and the capability
of the people concerned. To help you, HP Desk provides different levels
of administration capability which can be defined in the system
configuration, to allow you to delegate administration tasks while
maintaining security. Chapter 7 explains these capabilities in
detail.

Full power to perform any HP Desk administration task and reach any part
of the system accessible from within HP Desk, is given to a user who logs
on to MPE as the MGR user in the MAILDB group of the HPOFFICE account.
This includes the ability to access integrated applications and
associated passwords that may be set up, potentially giving wide-ranging
system access--in addition to access within HP Desk. For this reason, we
advise you to restrict this access to the HP 3000 System Manager. This
person can then set up a series of capabilities for HP Desk users that
suits the way HP Desk administration will be allocated in your
organization. Chapter 7 and Chapter 12 have more information on
Capability groups.

The System Administrator capability holds the greatest capability within
HP Desk. A user with this capability may perform any HP Desk
administration task, and accesses the sections of the system allowed by
the System Manager.

A user with Local Administrator capability has the power to update and
maintain the HP Desk Directory of users. They may add new names, modify
entries for people who have moved location, and delete the names of staff
who have left the organization. It is possible to integrate other
applications for a group using this capability.

A user with Network Administrator capability has the power to keep HP
Desk's route network in order.

A programmer may write and integrate applications, or a technical writer
may extend the Help text.
