Word Processing and File Converters

The HP Desk user sees word processing as a means of writing messages and
of working on longer documents - either documents they've created or
documents that have been sent to them. They can choose the method they
use to edit their text on screen, depending on their needs and
experience.

HP Desk is provided with an integral screen text editor, which enables
users to write the text of their messages. With terminals that don't
support full screen editing, HP Desk automatically starts another text
editor, TDP/3000, or if this is not installed, EDIT/3000. All three
editors create text items, that is, items comprising just USASCII text
characters.

The word processor, HP Slate, is supplied with HP Desk to create longer
messages. This can be run from the users Work Area, as can other word
processing applications which you may choose to purchase, such as HP
Word.

NewWave Mail and AdvanceMail both have integral screen editors. In
addition, personal computer users have a wide choice of word processing
applications available to them. MemoMaker, AdvanceWrite, or any
DCA-compatible word processor such as Displaywrite, can all be used.
(DCA is IBM's standard document format.) A document created with any of
these can be attached to an HP Desk message sent by AdvanceMail or
NewWave Mail.

Converting Between Different Word Processing Formats

If your installation takes full advantage of the available methods of
text creation, an HP Desk user could receive a message containing a
document created in any number of word-processed formats.

When all of the options are available, it is quite common for users to
receive a message containing a document that they cannot edit. This is
particularly likely if the message is sent from or received at at PC
using AdvanceMail or NewWave Mail. HP Desk overcomes the incompatibility
by using a number of document conversion programs. These convert a
document from one word processing format to another, before it is
delivered to the user's In Tray. Therefore a user may never receive a
document that they cannot read or edit.

Users may also wish to create documents in one format, and then have them
converted to another format. In fact users can perform a number of
separate conversions to get an item into a particular format.

However, when documents are converted from one format to another, there
is a likelihood that some of the original features (such as underlined
text, bold text and so on) will be lost. It should be remembered that
conversion is a one-way process--once features have been lost, they
cannot be restored by re-conversion. The more times you convert a
document, the fewer original features are retained and the more difficult
it becomes to revise.

An example is HPConvert/DCA which converts documents between IBM's DCA
format and HP Word or ASCII text. More specifically, HPConvert/DCA
converts documents created using IBM's Displaywrite 2 application, or
documents created by any other applications that conform to the same
subset of IBM's Document Content Architecture (DCA).

Note that HP Desk is the sole interface for these converters.

Converters are run automatically when:

   * A user reads or prints a non-text format document which is in HP
Desk. When an item is browsed in this way, its format (and also
       its item type) remain unchanged.
   * An interactive conversion is done (for example in a user's Work
       Area.)

Associated files

There are three files that HP Desk uses to control the conversions, they
are:

CONVERT.PUB.HPOFFICE

This file contains a list of the possible conversions that are available
in HP Desk. It is the file that HP Desk looks at when you ask to convert
a particular document type.

Each document format has a file type associated with it. This file shows
the "from" and the "to" filetypes and the conversion program associated
with it. HP Desk looks at the file type of the document you are wanting
to convert and then scans down the convert file for the appropriate
filetypes to which you can convert. It then displays the option to you
in terms of the document type.

FILETYPE.PUB.HPOFFICE

This file contains a list of formats that HP Desk will recognize. Each
time a new format is introduced to HP Desk this file should be checked to
make sure that HP Desk will know to expect it. Note that there are
several numbers used more than once. This is so that you can specify any
of the words such as "Gallery" or "Graphics Gallery" and Desk will pick
up the appropriate filecode and convert accordingly.

PCDETAIL.PUB.HPOFFICE

This file is the file that AdvanceMail and NewWave Mail uses to update
the conversion options that can be used on the PC.

HP Slate to Text converter. Converters are also available from Third
parties.

NOTE Convert/DCA is only available as part of HP DeskManagerPLUS

NOTE In order to run any converter involving HP Word you need to install the HP Word Intrinsics on your system.
NewWave Browsers NewWave Mail, in conjunction with HP Desk, gives NewWave users the ability to send messages as: * A NewWave Text Note. This is transported in ASCII, and requires no conversion when it reaches HP Desk. * A NewWave File Container. File Containers are used to transport DOS files through NewWave Mail. * A NewWave Object in serialized form, known as Serial Object Format (SOF). This Serial Object Format may contain (among other things) a NewWave Write document, a Scanning Gallery Image, or a Graphics Gallery Drawing or Chart. If the recipient is an HP Desk user, and the message they receive is an SOF, they will receive a message in their In Tray containing an HP Desk Distribution List, and an item marked as a NewWave package, which the HP Desk user would otherwise not be able to read. The NewWave browsers are the mechanism whereby an HP Desk user can read, print, and convert SOF items received from a NewWave Mail user. The SOF items may be converted into text or "exploded" into HP Desk packages. The browser components are: Browser name | Program file | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Serial Object Format Browser | SOFBROW.PUB.SYS | NewWave Write Browser | RDFBROW.PUB.SYS | Charting and Drawing Gallery Browser | GALBROW.PUB.SYS | Scanning Gallery Browser | IMGBRWO.PUB.SYS | Graphics Features HP Desk allows the conversion of a Gallery picture into a figure file. It also allows users to view a Gallery Drawing (as well as a Figure File) on the screen, as long as a Graphics terminal is used. The Curator converter is used to do this.
