HP DeskManager Administration

Obtaining Information

The more relevant information you can gather, the easier it will be to
resolve a problem or at least determine whether you can deal with it
yourself or you need to contact Hewlett-Packard.

The main sources of information available to you is the user who first
reported the problem (if this was the case) and the reports produced by
HP Desk.

You should already be using these reports in the day to day monitoring of
your HP Desk system. See Chapter 17 for more information. If you
haven't been practicing this kind of preventive medicine or if something
unforeseen has happened, these reports may help you pinpoint the cause of
the problem.

Here is a brief summary of the reports available and what you should look
for in them:

MERRQUE

Details which messages could not be transmitted.

MERROR

Details data sets over 85% full and corrupted items in the database.

Item Summary Report

Details on items in the Local Database. Consult this if you have
corrupted items in your database.

Mail Node Summary Report

Details mail in queue for each configured mailnode. Consult this if
users complain that messages are not getting delivered.

Local User Summary Report

Details the amount of disk space being used by each user in their various
HP Desk areas. If you are short on disk space, this will give you an
indication of which users to contact about deleting unwanted items.

User Diary Usage Report

Details the number of entries and insertions for each user along with the
earliest date for which an entry still remains on the database. If you
are short on disk space, this will give you an indication of which users
have a back log of old diary entries.

Local and Global Data Set Summary Report.

These reports detail how full the data sets in both of the databases are.
Refer to these reports if you have a storage overflow problem.

MAILSHOWNODE Report

Details outstanding mail to be delivered. Useful in the case of mail
build up.

MAILSTATUS Report

Gives details on the believed status of HP Desk (including the Mailroom
and the Transport Manager) as indicated by the appropriate fields in the
Local Database. Remember that this information could be up to two
minutes old because of the way that the Supervisor works.

Desklogs

A Desklog is a deferred spool file which is produced as an HP Desk
program attempts to shut down tidily after encountering an error for
which there is no existing error message. They are intended for use by
your Hewlett-Packard representative.

$STDLIST Reports

These are produced for the processes which run under the Supervisor and
for the Supervisor itself. Some are not produced until after a
MAILSHUTDOWN command has been issued. For some key processes, such as
the Mailroom, $STDLIST reports are produced when the process stops
whether the Supervisor is running or not.

SHOWJOB

Gives details on what is happening on the HP 3000.
