HP DeskManager Administration

Operator Command Formats (cont.)

MAILMANOFF

MAILMANOFF disables the transport system, closing down the Transport
Manager and Master Trucks

Syntax

      MAILMANOFF

Notes

The MAILMANOFF command closes down the Transport Manager, the Master
Trucks and their Slave Trucks running on remote computers. HP Desk,
however, can still be used locally.

You should monitor the console log for the Transport Manager's and Master
Trucks' log off messages, to verify that the system has shut down.

A Master Truck stops only when it has finished handling its current
message.

The Transport Manager and Master Trucks should always be shut down in
this controlled manner. An example Mailmanoff command might be:

     MAILMANOFF

Stop Process request sent to HPDesk Supervisor

     END OF PROGRAM
     :
11:01/#J5/26/HPDESK - TMANAGER requested to stop on 06.06.92 at 1101
11:01/#J5/41/HPDESK - Transport system shut down
     11:03/#J5/26/HPDESK - TMANAGER stopped

MAILMANON

Starts the Transport Manager and a specified number of Master Trucks.

Syntax

      MAILMANON n

where n is an integer in the range 1 to 36 and specifies the number of
Master Trucks to be run. If no number is specified, or if an invalid
number is specified, the number 1 is assumed.

Notes

The number of Trucks you specify depends on a number of factors including
your network configuration and traffic density. In most circumstances
one or two Master Trucks will be sufficient.

The MAILMANON command sends a start request to the Supervisor which then
starts up the Transport Manager. The Supervisor also streams the job
file TRUCKS.MAILJOB.HPOFFICE which starts the specified number of Master
Trucks.

The console log needs monitoring for the log on messages of the Master
Truck jobs to verify that the system is working correctly.

The Transport Manager and Master Trucks should always be started in this
way. If the TRUCKS job cannot log on, check the JOBFENCE and LIMIT
parameters for the system, adjusting them as necessary to allow it to log
on. HP Desk does not function correctly unless this procedure is
observed.

When the necessary initialization has been completed and the other jobs
streamed, the TRUCKS job logs off.

Further Master Trucks can be started at a later time using the
STARTMTRUCKS command.

An example of the command used to start 2 Master Trucks might be:

     mailmanon 2

Start Process request sent to the HPDesk Supervisor

     END OF PROGRAM
     :
     11:05/#J5/26/HPDESK - TMANAGER created on 06.06.92 at 1105
     11:05/#J5/26/HPDESK - MAILTELL created on 06.06.92 at 1105
     11:06/#J8/19 LOGON FOR : MTRUCKS,MGR.HPOFFICE,PUB ON LDEV #10
     11:06/#J5/26/HPDESK - Transport system started
     11:07/#J9/56 LOGON FOR : MTRUCK0,MAILMAN.HPOFFICE,HPMAIL ON LDEV #10
     11:08/#J5/17/LOGON FOR: MTRUCK1,MAILMAN.HPOFFICE,HPMAIL ON LDEV #10
     11:09/#J8/19 LOGOFF ON LDEV #10

After the MAILMANON command is issued, the Supervisor starts up the
Transport system and the specified number of Master Trucks. An
appreciable time may elapse before the Transport system started message
appears. During this time the Transport Manager is scanning the mail
queues to build up the Transport Messages Scheduling File.

MAILNODEREPORT

Reports on outstanding mail for a specified mailnode.

Syntax

      MAILNODEREPORT [mailnode]

where mailnode is the location code and sublocation code for which the
report is required. A slash character (/) separating the location code
from the sublocation code in the command is optional.

Notes

The MAILNODEREPORT command reports on the mail outstanding for any
particular mailnode. This facility is useful in locating messages about
which users have inquired. You can determine from the report whether or
not the messages are still waiting to be transmitted to another computer.

The following information is provided in the report:

Type The type of item on the queue (that is, a message, a reply,
              or an acknowledgment).

Date The date the item was originally created.

Time The time the item was originally created.

Creator The name of the creator of the item.

Reference The internal item number of the item, uniquely identifying
No. it. This number is also shown on the Message List produced
when the user opens a message and on the Audit file
(AUDITFIL) to provide a cross reference.

An error message is displayed if the mailnode specified does not exist.

The following example shows the MAILNODEREPORT command being used to see
what mail is queued for mailnode SALE2/SF:

     :MAILNODEREPORT SALE2/SF

Outstanding mail for Mail Node SALE2/SFD on 06.06.92 at 1440

MAILOMGATEOFF

Stops the HP OpenMail gateway.

Syntax

      MAILOMGATEOFF

Notes

The MAILOMGATEOFF command stops the HP OpenMail gateway process, and
prevents mail from being sent or received from HP OpenMail systems.

This command does not stop the HP DeskManager Gateway Intrinsics - the
Gateway Intrinsics can be stopped using the MAILGATEINTOFF command.

Syntax

      MAILOMGATEON

Notes

The MAILOMGATEON command:

   * Enables the HP Desk Gateway Intrinsics (if they're not already
       enabled).

   * Starts the HP OpenMail gateway process. This allows mail to be
sent and received from HP OpenMail systems.

where n is an integer in the range 1 to 36 and specifies the number of
Master Trucks to be run. If no number is specified, or if an invalid
number is specified, the number 1 is assumed.

Notes

The MAILON command is an easy way to:

   *   Start the Supervisor
   *   Start the Mailroom
   *   Enable the user interface
   * Start the Transport Manager and Master Trucks
   * Enable DS Slave Trucks to deliver mail to your computer

MAILREPORT

Generates a Maintenance summary report

Syntax

      MAILREPORT n

where n is an integer in the range 1 to 127 and specifies the required
number of copies. If no number is given, 1 is assumed.

Notes

The MAILREPORT command allows you to print extra copies of the latest
Maintenance Summary Report (MREPORT). If required, MREPORT can be equated
to a specific output device or disk file. If no file equation is used,
the report goes to the device LP.

The MAILREPORT command retrieves the information from the permanent file
called MSORTOUT.MAILDB.HPOFFICE which was generated the last time the
Maintenance Program was run. The HP Desk databases are not accessed.

     :FILE MREPORT;DEV=LASER;ENV=LP.ENV2680A.SYS
     :MAILREPORT 2

     END OF PROGRAM
     :

MAILRESTORE

Restores the HP Desk databases and associated files from tape.

Syntax

      MAILRESTORE

Notes

The MAILRESTORE command notifies the Supervisor to stream
MAILREST.MAILJOB.HPOFFICE. It shuts down the Supervisor, logs off anyone
using HP Desk and waits for any non-Supervisor processes to finish. Once
all processes have finished, it restores all files and databases in the
MAILDB group of the HPOFFICE account.

The date and time of the last store are displayed:

Database last stored on [date] at [time]

As with the Maintenance program store job, MAILREST requires Operator
capability to run because it has to handle privileged files. If you do
not want MGR.HPOFFICE to have this capability, you will have to change
the job to run in another account which already does (OPERATOR.SYS for
example).

The lines of code you will have to alter to do this, along with examples
of what to change them to, are given in the comments at the beginning of
the MAILREST job.

MAILROOMOFF

Closes down the Mailroom and any server programs which might be running.

Syntax

      MAILROOMOFF

Notes

This command also shuts down the Filing Cabinet search program
(Searcher).

When the MAILROOMOFF command is issued, HP Desk displays:

HPDESK - MAILROOM requested to stop on [date] at [time]

Once the Mailroom has actually been shut down (this might take several
minutes), HP Desk displays:

HPDESK - MAILROOM stopped

The Mailroom will finish processing any outstanding mail before it shuts
down. This means that there may be a delay between the two messages
appearing on the console. On a busy system this may take anything up to
half an hour.

The MAILROOMOFF command does not terminate HP Desk user sessions.

If the MAILROOMOFF command is used too soon after the MAILROOMON command,
it might fail. If this is the case, re-issue the MAILROOMOFF command.

     MAILROOMOFF

Stop Process request sent to HPDesk Supervisor

MAILROOMON

Enables local delivery of mail.

Syntax

      MAILROOMON

Notes

The MAILROOMON command starts up the Mailroom, which could otherwise be
started by a MAILON command. If you do not have the Mailroom running,
messages are not collected from local users' Out Trays, and messages
arriving from another system is not delivered to their In Trays.

MAILROUTEINFO

Lists routing information.

Syntax

      MAILROUTEINFO [mailnode]

where mailnode is the location code and sublocation code for which the
report is required. A slash character (/) separating the location code
from the sublocation code in the command is optional. If no parameter is
specified, information on all routes configured on the system is
supplied.

Notes

The MAILROUTEINFO command lists the routing information for your computer
without having to run the Configuration program.

The command provides information on all configured mailnodes. This
information includes whether the mailnodes are local or remote, and
through which computers their mail is routed. Error messages are
produced for any remote mailnodes that do not have routes assigned to
them.

     MAILROUTEINFO

     Default Route is through LONDON

     Node Local/Remote Routing computers

     MANF2/AD Node is Local

     MANF2/PC Node is Local

     MANF2/PH Node is Local

     EUCORP/AD 1 route(s) to it LONDON

     EUCORP/LE 1 route(s) to it LONDON

     END OF PROGRAM
     :

In this example, the MAILROUTEINFO command is used to check the routing
information for all the mailnodes configured on computer LVRPOOL.

MAILSCHEDULE

Allows you to run the Maintenance job at specific times and on specific
days. Also allows you to schedule the Bin Emptier
(HP DeskManagerPLUS only), and to send Sequenced Directory Updates
automatically at specific times and on specific days.

Syntax

      MAILSCHEDULE

Notes

Once you have entered the MAILSCHEDULE command, you are prompted ot enter
the time(s) and the day(s) when the task should be scheduled.

Times must be typed in 24 hour clock format. You can choose up to six
times at which do the scheduling. For example:

     Times > 05:30, 12:00; 18:30

Days must be the names of days of the week. If the list is longer than
can fit on one line on the screen, type either & or - to indicate that
the list extends onto the next line.

If you no longer want to run a program automatically, just press Return
at the Times > prompt.

If you want to run the Maintenance job automatically, you need a tape or
cartridge already mounted before it is scheduled to start. If you
require the Maintenance job to do a backup of the databases, then you
must also ensure that the tape or cartridge can be picked up
automatically when the store part of the Maintenance job runs. This can
be done by using either tape labeling or AUTOREPLY. See the MPE Reference
manuals for further details. Automated maintenance is only effective if
the databases and files to be stored off, all fit onto a single tape or
cartridge. This means that it is of most use to the Administrator of a
small HP Desk system, say on an HP 3000 Series 37.

For a task to be run automatically, the Supervisor must be running,
because the Timer program (HP Desk's internal clock) runs under it.

If it is necessary to shut down the system for some reason, use the
MAILOFF command, rather than the MAILSHUTDOWN command. If you use the
MAILSHUTDOWN command for any reason, restart the Supervisor immediately
afterwards. You can use the SUPVON command to restart the Supervisor
without restarting any other HP Desk processes, such as the Mailroom or
the Transport Manager.

If you want to send Sequenced Directory Updates automatically, you must
first fill in the Sequence Information screen of the Configurator. See
Chapter 12 for more details. Updates will not be sent automatically
unless this screen is filled in correctly.

MAILSHOWNODE

Gives information about what mail is outstanding for all computers, for
default computers or for a specified computer.

Syntax

      MAILSHOWNODE [computername]

where computername is the name of a computer. Only messages for remote
mailnodes that are routed through this computer are listed. If the
computer name field is empty, information on outstanding mail for all
remote mail nodes is supplied.

Notes

The MAILSHOWNODE command displays on the console the amount of mail
waiting to be sent over data communication links or by EFT/FSC to remote
mailnodes in your HP Desk network. The information for each mailnode is
sorted according to computer.

If there is any mail queued for a computer, the following information is
listed:

   * Computer/Mailnode - the name of the computer and the mailnodes
       associated with it.

   * Number of messages outstanding at each priority:

Urgent These are messages that have been marked
urgent by the sender before being mailed.

Normal These are messages that have not been marked
                             urgent.

Deferred These are messages that could not be
transmitted at the last attempt, perhaps
because of a temporary lack of space on the
                             remote database.

   * Oldest Message - the date and time of the oldest message in the
       queue for the remote mailnode.

If the computer is a default routing computer, then this will be
indicated when MAILSHOWNODE is executed without a parameter (that is when
all the computers are listed). When MAILSHOWNODE is executed with a
default routing computer as a parameter, then this will display the
details of mail for all nodes explicitly routed through that computer,
and for all nodes that are not explicitly routed at all.
