Upgrading HP Desk to Version B.05.00
While it is possible to upgrade your system by installing the new version
and starting straight away in the work environment, it is recommended
that you familiarize yourself with the enhancements to HP Desk and
consider whether and how they can benefit your installation before
starting live. The enhancements for this version of HP DeskManager are
listed earlier in this chapter.
If you want to start up immediately--as with previous versions of the
product you must issue the first MAILON command when logged on to the MGR
user of the HPOFFICE account.
If you wish to make use of password controls, you should run the
MAILCONFIG program and make the appropriate settings on the User Password
Composition screen. These will be effective immediately.
If you have HP DeskManagerPLUS installed and you wish to take advantage
of the new fully concurrent garbage collection facilities, then a number
of configuration and other changes will be necessary:
Firstly, the daily running of MAILMAINT from your job streams or
by MAILSCHEDULE must be disabled, and replaced with MAILBINEMPTY,
which does not require the rest of HP Desk to shut down.
_________________________________________________________________
NOTE MAILMAINT should still be scheduled to run no less than once
a week. MAILSCHEDULE can be used to schedule both the Bin
Empty process and maintenance.
_________________________________________________________________
Secondly, the Garbage Collector process must be enabled. A screen
in MAILCONFIG is provided for this under the System Menu. You
should identify the periods of time during the day that the
program is to be active and when it should be paused. This screen
also allows a major part of MAILMAINT's activity to be skipped
(since this is unnecessary when running the new facilities). The
time taken to run MAILMAINT--even on weekly basis--will be
markedly reduced.
Thirdly, if you have applications that process the AUDITFIL and
STATSFIL files regularly, then you will need to stream the job
CHNGLOG.MAILJOB at appropriate times to switch the files to make
them accessible, since this will not be done daily by MAILMAINT.
(Alternatively, the functionality within the CHNGLOG job could be
included in your own job streams.) You should ensure that the
sizes of these log files are large enough for your installation,
and if necessary both the MAILMNT2 and CHNGLOG jobs should be
modified accordingly. If the statistics compression utilities are
used, then it will be necessary to ensure that the entire output
to the AUDITFIL and STATSFIL since the last MAILMAINT run are
retained. The STATSCOM job will need modification to allow for
the large files being processed. For further details on
maintenance procedures see Chapter 17 .
If you do not wish to utilize the new concurrent garbage collection
mechanism or do not have HP DeskManagerPLUS installed you need not take
any of the above steps. The MAILMAINT suite will operate in the same way
as previously.
NOTE Several files will be overwritten when HP Desk is re-installed.
* All files in MAILJOB.HPOFFICE are replaced.
* Adjustments to the maintenance and backup jobs to use a different
tape device, or the switching out of a store in MAILMAINT
altogether and so on, must be made again to the relevant files.
* Certain files in the group MAILCONF and MAILHELP will be
overwritten, but backup copies of the existing files will
automatically be taken first during the installation. Any changes
or customization of these files that you wish to retain must also
be re-applied. These files are:
New File Old file saved as:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SOFTKEYS.MAILCONF OLDSKEYS.MAILCONF
USERCONF.MAILCONF OLDUCONF.MAILCONF
INITHELP.MAILCONF OLDIHELP.MAILCONF
SERVERS.MAILCONF OLDSERV.MAILCONF
Any help pages in the "non-Hewlett-Packard" range (numbers 9000 onwards)
will remain unaltered after installation, however any changes that you
may have made to help pages in the range 0 to 8999 must be re-applied.
(See HP DeskManager Customization for details on the Help system.)
