Magneto-Optical Media Management User's Guide
GLOSSARY
Autochanger
A mechanism in the Model 20GB/A device which removes disks from the
system's input area (mail slot), places them in storage slots, and
accesses the appropriate disk to and from one of the drives.
Cartridge
See Magneto-Optical Disks.
Disk
See Magneto-Optical Disks.
Flip
The process where the picker rotates in order to switch the top side of
the disk to the bottom. A flip cannot occur during a translate.
formatting
Preparing the surface of the optical disk for writing. The formatting
task is performed with the INITMO command of MOUTIL. See initializing.
Front Panel
Includes a power switch, a control panel used to manage and display
autochanger functions, and a place to insert and remove disks.
initializing
Creating volume set information on optical disks so that they can be
mounted into the MPE/iX file system as private volumes. The initializing
task is performed with the INITMO command of MOUTIL. See formatting.
LDEV Parameter
An integer value between 2 and 32767. (1 is reserved for a system volume
which is used to boot from). It is used to identify a particular
auto-changer or magneto-optical device.
Magneto-Optical (MO)
Rewritable Optical technology which uses a plastic disk with a magnetic
layer. To write, spots on the magnetic layer are heated with the laser
beam and magnetically polarized by the drive's magnet in one of two
directions (representing either digital 0s or 1s). To read, a detector
sees the rotation of the beam, reflected from the magnetic layer.
Magneto-Optical disks
(Also disks, cartridges and media.) All of these terms are synonymous
with the 5.25-inch magneto-optical disks which can store 650 megabytes of
data (325 megabytes per side).
Mailslot
The mailslot is where disks are inserted and removed from the Model
20GB/A.
Media (pl.), or Medium (sing.)
See Magneto-Optical Disks.
Media Manager
A system process that controls the magneto-optical disks within the Model
20GB/A device.
media name
The name of the media set made available for use by STORE/iX II. The
media name is the name assigned during the STORE operation.
MEDIA STG SLOT Parameter
A number between 1 and 1000 specifying from which storage slot in the
Model 20GB/A box the Magneto-Optical media should be obtained.
media sub-name
The name of the surface within the media set to use. The media sub-name
is the sub-name assigned during the STORE operation.
Picker
The part of the Model 20GB/A that rotates, flips, and transports disks to
and from storage slots, drives, and the mail slot.
Read/Write Head
This part of the disk drive assembly uses a laser and a magnet to read
and write data on the magneto-optical disk. To write, a spot on the
magnetic layer of the disk is heated by the laser to a point where it can
be altered by the magnet. To read, the light from the laser is reflected
from the spot. The magnetic alteration causes the light to be polarized
in one direction (interpreted as a "1") or the opposite direction
(interpreted as a "0").
Rear Panel
The rear of the Model 20GB/A, which could be covered by a cabinet,
provides voltage selection, SCSI connections, and drive address select
switches.
Rewritable Optical
This is an optical disk technology in which data can be repeatedly
written.
scratching
Making an optical disk surface available to STORE/iX II for rewriting.
The scratching task is performed with the SCRATCH command of MOUTIL.
SCSI
An acronym for the industry-standard Small Computer Systems Interface.
The HP-SC card is a SCSI host adapter card.
SIDE Parameter
A number specifying which side of the media is to be used. The number 1
specifies the "A" side of the Magneto-Optical media. The number 2
specifies the "B" side of the Magneto-Optical media.
Storage Slots
There are 32 storage slots for magneto-optical disks inside the Model
20GB/A.
Swap
The process where a picker replaces one disk in the drive with another,
returning the first to its storage slot.
Translate
The process where the picker is moved vertically within the Model 20GB/A
to the right side or vice-versa.
Vertical Picker Move
The process where the picker is moved vertically within the Model 20GB/A.
Vertical moves are used to correctly position the picker in front of a
storage slot and to position for translates.
VOLNAME Parameter
Volume Name. Any string of 1 to 16 alphanumeric and underscore
characters used to uniquely specify and identify a volume on
magneto-optical media.
Write-Protect
To protect the data on the disk from being erased or overwritten, use a
write-protect tab located on either side of the disk cartridge.
