Magneto-Optical Media Management User's Guide
Chapter 1 Introduction
The Optical Disk Library System (Model 20GB/A) is a Direct Access
Secondary Storage (DASS) device. This device allows unattended storage
of large quantities of data by providing automatic mounting and retrieval
of up to 32 magneto-optical disks. Up to 20.8 Gbytes of data can be
stored on a single library system. If STORE/iX II data compression is
utilized, the storage capacity can be increased to nearly 40 Gbytes.
The Optical Disk Library System consists of two magneto-optical disk
drives and physical storage for the 32 magneto-optical disks. An
autochanger mechanism removes disks from the system's input area (the
mailslot), places them in storage (slots 1 through 32), and accesses the
appropriate disk to and from one of the drives.
The Optical Disk Library System is available in two styles:
* Deskside model (C1701A Option 1AB)
* Rackmount model (C1701A Option 1AC)
The deskside model provides cabinetry for a single optical disk library
system. Rackmounting can accommodate up to two optical disk library
systems.
The library system is operated through front panel buttons, commands from
the Magneto-Optical Utility program (MOUTIL), commands from STORE/iX II,
and through applications that have been written using the Magneto-Optical
AIFs.
The front panel buttons control the physical loading and unloading of
disks to and from particular storage slots in the device.
STORE/iX II (36397A or 36398A) is the program used to store and restore
data to the library system and to other devices. The STORE/iX II program
is documented in the TurboSTORE/XL II User's Guide (36388-90001).
Magneto-Optical AIFs are operating system architected interfaces that
provide file system access to a Magneto-Optical Disk Library System. The
Magneto-Optical AIFs are documented in the Architected Interface
Facility: Operating System Reference Manual (36374-90001).
MOUTIL provides an interface to the user for unlocking and locking the
access area (mailslot) on the library system, for initializing,
formatting, and scratching optical disks resident on the library system,
and for synchronizing the library system's media management table for
reading and writing data. Use of the MOUTIL program is documented in
this manual.
