HP Motif/iX System Administrator's Supplement
Network Overview
An HP Motif/iX application connects to and communicates with the X
display server process of an X display on a LAN. TCP/IP is the networking
protocol used to transfer data from the X client application to the X
display server and back. The data packets that are transferred
constitute a higher-level communication protocol known as the X protocol.
This is the protocol used by the client to request user interface
services, and by the server to inform the client of events that have
occurred. Examples of events are the pressing of a mouse button, or a
key being pressed in the client's window.

This picture provides a graphical representation of a network that
consists of an HP 3000 system, an HP 9000 system, a server, and an X
display. Other vendor systems may also exist in the network and can
access the same X display.
