Performing Console Tasks
The system console, also referred to as the console, is a terminal
connected to your computer. It responds to a special set of commands
that other terminals cannot interpret. By using these commands, you can
get a comprehensive picture of all system activity.
To identify the console
The console is usually logical device LDEV 20, though it can be moved to
another LDEV. To determine the current location of the console, enter:
CONSOLE
The computer responds:
________________________________________________________________________

CONSOLE IS LDEV 20

________________________________________________________________________
To log on to the console
To log onto the console, type the following at the MPE XL prompt:
HELLO OPERATOR.SYS
When the system prompt, usually a colon (:), appears on the left side of
the screen, you have successfully started a session as OPERATOR.SYS. The
system asks you to enter one or more passwords. Once you do so, the
session begins.
CAUTION When you begin using the console, you can treat it the same way
you do a standard terminal, with one exception: Do not turn the
console off!
To assign or change your password
Use the PASSWORD command to assign your own password or to change the
existing password. You use this command interactively; it prompts you
for required input. For example:
PASSWORD
The system responds:
ENTER OLD USER PASSWORD:
ENTER NEW USER PASSWORD:
ENTER NEW PASSWORD AGAIN:
PASSWORD WAS CHANGED SUCCESSFULLY.
To list OPERATOR.SYS capabilities
Besides password information, you should find out what capabilities
OPERATOR.SYS has, which determines the kinds of things you can do with
the computer. For example, if you are not assigned save files (SF)
capability, you cannot save information in a computer file.
To list the capabilities of OPERATOR.SYS, enter:
LISTUSER OPERATOR;FORMAT;DETAIL
The computer describes OPERATOR.SYS with by displaying information in the
following form. The capabilities appear on the bottom line. (Yours may
be different than this example.)
