System Administrator's Quick Reference Guide

Prerequisites to Shutting Down the System

There are prerequisites that must be fulfilled before shutting down the
system.

1. Telling Users of the Shutdown

You may want to include a notice of the shutdown in the system WELCOME
message. The syntax for notifying all users of an impending shutdown is:

TELL @;SYSTEM SHUTDOWN AT hh:mm.PLEASE LOG OFF AND TELL YOUR QUIET NEIGHBORS.

2. Preventing New System Activity

The syntax for preventing the start of new jobs and sessions and the
execution of jobs is:

     LIMIT 0,0
     JOBFENCE 14

The syntax for checking the status of system limits is:

     SHOWJOB STATUS

3. Sending Users a WARN Message

The syntax for warning users to log off the system is:

WARN @;SHUTDOWN WILL BEGIN AT hh:mm. PLEASE LOG OFF.

4. Clearing Console Requests

The syntax for displaying pending console requests is:

     RECALL

The syntax for clearing pending requests is:

     REPLY pin,0

Assigning a value of 0 to the ldev parameter cancels the console request
for the process identification number (PIN).

5. Aborting Remaining Jobs

The syntax for listing jobs is:

     SHOWJOB JOB=@J

If no jobs are active, the system will respond with the message:

     NO SUCH JOBS

If there are active jobs on the system, they will be listed.

The syntax for aborting jobs is:

     ABORTJOB #Jnnn

Perform this step for each job listed by SHOWJOB. You may wish to wait
until all executing jobs have entered the READY state. Jobs in the READY
state can be saved to a spooler tape.

The syntax for verifying that the job status has been changed is:

     SHOWJOB JOB=@J

6. Displaying Sessions Still in Progress

The syntax for listing sessions is:

     SHOWJOB JOB=@S

7. Sending a Final Warning

The syntax for sending users a final warning is:

WARN @;LOG OFF NOW! SHUTDOWN ABOUT TO BEGIN.
