System Administrator's Quick Reference Guide
Prerequisites to Backing Up the System
Before starting a system backup:
* Obtain an adequate supply of storage tapes.
* Label each tape.
* Organize the tapes in order of use.
1. Telling Users About the Backup
You may want to include a notice of the backup schedule in the system
WELCOME message (refer to "Creating a WELCOME Message", chapter 6 of this
manual).
The syntax for notifying all users of an impending backup is:
TELL @;SYSTEM BACKUP AT hh:mm.PLEASE LOG OFF AND TELL YOUR QUIET NEIGHBORS.
2. Preventing New System Activity
The syntax for preventing the start of new jobs and sessions and the
executing of jobs is:
LIMIT 0,0
JOBFENCE 14
The syntax for checking the status of system limits is:
SHOWJOB STATUS
The JOBFENCE should be 14, and the JLIMIT (job limit) and SLIMIT (session
limit) should each be zero (0).
3. Sending Users a WARN Message
The syntax for warning users to log off the system is:
WARN @;BACKUP WILL BEGIN AT hh:mm. PLEASE LOG OFF.
4. Clearing Console Requests
The syntax for displaying pending console requests is:
RECALL
The syntax for clearing pending requests is:
REPLY pin,0
Assigning a value of zero (0) to the ldev parameter of the process
identification number (PIN) cancels the console request.
5. Aborting Remaining Jobs
The syntax for listing jobs is:
SHOWJOB JOB=@J
If no jobs are active, the system will respond with the message:
NO SUCH JOBS
If there are active jobs on the system, they will be listed.
The syntax for aborting jobs with a status of EXEC is:
ABORTJOB #Jnnn
Perform this step for each job listed by SHOWJOB. For a full system
backup, you may wish to wait until all executing jobs have entered the
READY state. Jobs in the READY state can be saved to a spooler tape.
The syntax for verifying that the job status has been changed is:
SHOWJOB JOB=@J
6. Displaying Sessions Still in Progress
The syntax for listing sessions is:
SHOWJOB JOB=@S
7. Sending a Final Warning
The syntax for sending users a final warning is:
WARN @;LOG OFF NOW! BACKUP ABOUT TO BEGIN.
8. Halting Any Remaining Sessions
The syntax for halting sessions is:
ABORTJOB #Snnn
Perform this step for each session (except the system console's session)
listed by SHOWJOB. Do not abort the session on the system console.
The syntax for verifying the status of jobs and sessions is:
SHOWJOB
The list should now contain only the session on the system console.
