Restarting From Tape With an Alternate Configuration File
A different version of the CONFIG.SYS group can be stored on its own
system load tape. You can make as many different versions as you need.
For information on creating different versions of the CONFIG.SYS group,
refer to chapter 1, "Installing Your System".
Default configuration groups are provided on the factory supplied system
load tape for the various 900 Series HP 3000 systems.
1. Shutting Users Out of the System and Backing it Up
Execute a full system backup, as described in chapter 7, "System Backup,"
including backing up the configuration files. Remember, any remaining
spoolfiles will be lost unless backed up to tape. Begin this procedure
by shutting down the system.
:CTRL A
=SHUTDOWN
2. Resetting the System
To reset the system follow the steps described below:
1. Mount the alternately configured system load tape on the tape
drive and put the drive on line.
2. At the system prompt, enter:
:CTRL B
This resets the system and displays the CM> prompt.
3. At the CM> prompt, enter:
CM>RS
This executes a hard reset that resets memory.
4. Press Y in answer to the prompt:
ENTER Y TO CONFIRM YOUR INTENTION TO RESTART THE SYSTEM (Y/N?)
5. When the message TO OVERRIDE, PRESS ANY KEY WITHIN 10 SECONDS
appears:
Press any key.
6. Press N in answer to the prompt:
BOOT FROM PRIMARY BOOT PATH (Y OR N?)
7. Press Y in answer to the prompt:
BOOT FROM ALTERNATE BOOT PATH (Y OR N?)
8. Press Y in answer to the prompt:
INTERACT WITH IPL (Y or N?)
The system will boot from the system load tape. At the end of the tape
activity the ISL prompt (ISL>) is displayed.
3. Restarting the System
At the ISL> prompt, enter:
ISL>UPDATE CONFIG
This instructs the system to load the system files and the configuration
from the tape. All other files except spooled files are loaded from
disk. Spooled files will be reloaded from tapes (refer to procedure 6).
4. Logging On
At the end of the start procedure, enter your logon ID and password:
MPE XL:HELLO MANAGER.SYS;HIPRI
5. Restarting Job Streaming and Spooling
To restart the job streams facility and spooler, enter:
:STREAMS 10
:STARTSPOOL LP
This starts the streams facility and the spooler for the device class LP
(line printer).
6. Reloading Spooled Files
To reload spooled files, follow the steps described below:
1. Mount the tape on the tape drive and put the drive online.
2. Create the file equation, enter the SPFXFER utility, and restore
the files:
:FILE T;DEV=TAPE
:SPFXFER
>INPUT @.@;*T
>EXIT
3. Remove the tape from the drive and store it.
If files are restored to a device other than the one on which they were
originally stored, the files are automatically assigned new file numbers
and new devicefile IDs.
