Managing HP X.400 Administrator's Guide

X.400 Components

The following section identifies the components associated with the HP
X.400 product.

Decoder

The decoder takes messages from the Output Queue(s) (OQs) belonging to
the client HP X.400/HP Desk Node(s) and decodes them into Interchange
Format files. These files are placed in the corresponding Decoder Output
Queue (DOQ) for delivery to the HP X.400/HP Desk Node.

Elm/Mailx

Elm and mailx are the interactive message processing systems for the
HP-UX environment. Elm and mailx send and receive messages using the
UNIX program Sendmail.

Encoder

The encoder accepts messages in Interchange Format from one of the HP
X.400/HP Desk Node's Encoder Input Queues (EIQs) and encodes them into
ASN.1 MPDUs. These MPDUs are placed in the Input Queue (IQ) for
processing by the MTA.

HP DeskManager

HP DeskManager allows the user to exchange mail between HP Desk and the
HP X.400 product using HP Desk.

HP OpenMail/X.400 Interface

The HP OpenMail/X.400 interface passes messages for X.400 users from HP
OpenMail to the X.400 MTA for delivery. It also receives messages from
HP OpenMail users.

HP X.400/HP Desk

HP X.400/HP Desk is located on the HP X.400/HP Desk Node and connects HP
DeskManager to the X.400 server. It translates HP DeskManager messages
into Interchange Format files and transfers them to the Encoder Input
Queue (EIQ) belonging to the HP X.400/HP Desk Node, using the Network
File Transfer (NFT) service. It also receives Interchange Format files
from the X.400 server and translates them into HP DeskManager messages.

Message Transfer Agent (MTA)

The MTA is a background networking process that monitors the outgoing and
incoming queues. The Output Queue (OQ)
contains entries for messages which are destined for adjacent MTAs. The
Input Queue (IQ)
contains entries for messages received from adjacent MTAs via the
Reliable Transfer Server (RTS). The MTA also routes X.400 messages and
generates delivery/nondelivery reports, if requested, to be sent back to
the message originator
.

NS 3000

NS 3000 allows communication with other HP NS systems. NS 3000 is used
with HP Desk. The NS Network File Transfer (NFT) service is used to
transfer messages between the HP X.400/HP Desk Nodes and X.400.

NS/9000

NS/9000 allows communication with other NS systems. The NS Network File
Transfer (NFT) service is used to transfer messages between the HP
X.400/HP Desk Nodes and X.400.

HP OpenMail

HP OpenMail is an X.400 standard-based UNIX mail server that enables
users to communicate on private and public mailing systems.

OSI Transport Services

The OSI Transport Services (OTS) provides the interface to Layers 4 and 5
of the OSI model. OTS supports Basic Activity Subset (BAS) defined by
CCITT X.215, X.225, Transport Class 0, Transport Class 2, and Transport
Class 4 over X.25, and Transport Class 4 over LAN.

Reliable Transfer Server (RTS)

The RTS is responsible for reliably transferring Application Protocol
Data Units (PDUs)
between its user entities and their peers on other systems. It provides
a reliable transfer mechanism for transferring messages to/from the MTA
that it is serving and to/from target MTAs on other systems. It is
responsible for opening and closing session connections and transferring
the messages over those connections.

Sendmail

Sendmail performs internetwork forwarding to deliver messages to their
destination. Sendmail sends a message to one or more recipients, routing
the message over the necessary networks.

X.25

X.25 is a CCITT international network protocol for both public and
private networks. X.25 is a level 3 packet switching network.

X4mailer

X4mailer is designed to accept messages from the UNIX program Sendmail
for submission into the X.400 network, and to receive incoming X.400
messages. X4mailer acts as a bridge between the UNIX mail and the X.400
domain.

X4xfer

X4xfer transfers Interchange Format files created by the decoder from the
Decoder Output Queues (DOQs) to the corresponding HP X.400/HP Desk Node
using the Network File Transfer (NFT) service.
