Managing HP X.400 Administrator's Guide
What is HP X.400?
HP X.400 allows elm, mailx, HP OpenMail, and HP Desk users to exchange
electronic mail with users of other vendors' systems that offer X.400
connections. The HP X.400 High-Level API provides access to X.400 for
user applications. HP X.400 can interoperate with systems that use the
CCITT 1984 or 1988 X.400 recommendations. HP X.400 can also be used as a
backbone for your electronic mail system.
Figure 1-1. HP X.400 Product Overview
HP X.400 Features
Besides allowing the exchange of electronic mail with other vendors'
X.400 systems using various interfaces, HP X.400 also offers the
following:
* HP OpenMail and HP Desk users can send binary files (spreadsheets,
graphics, and word processing files) in addition to ASCII text
messages. Binary files are implemented as "unidentified body
part" types.
* One HP X.400 system can support up to 200 adjacent MTAs, HP
X.400/HP Desk Nodes, and API clients.
* PC users running HP AdvanceMail or NewWave Mail can create
messages on their PC that can be sent to X.400 recipients.
* Administrators can use commands or run a menu-driven interface to
configure, manage, and troubleshoot HP X.400.
* Administrators can use a full set of tools to test
interoperability with other X.400 vendors and to troubleshoot
problems.
* System administrators can run a monitoring tool that warns them of
potential problems such as running out of disk space or having too
many mesages in the message queues.
* HP X.400 implements the CCITT X.400 recommendations and conforms
to the CEN/CENELEC (A3211), CEPT (A311), and NIST X.400 profiles.
* HP X.400 complies with the U.S. GOSIP Specification version 1
(FIPS-146).
Using HP X.400 with elm and mailx
The HP X.400 product used with elm and mailx offers standard-based
multivendor connectivity for HP 9000 computers. Users can send and
receive electronic mail messages throughout their multivendor and
multi-operating system environments.
The HP X.400 product used with elm and mailx runs on a HP 9000 computer
and provides an X.400 gateway to UNIX mail users
. This allows UNIX mail users to exchange electronic mail with users of
other systems through X.400 in a multivendor environment.
The HP X.400 product used with elm and mailx conforms to OSI
specifications. This product provides format and text conversion,
addressing, and other common electronic mail functions as defined by the
1984 CCITT
X.400 specification.
Using HP X.400 with HP OpenMail
The HP X.400 product integrated with HP OpenMail
enables users to exchange text and binary file types (e.g. spreadsheet,
word processing, and graphics). The addressing scheme in HP OpenMail is
consistent with the X.400 standard, and the message features provide a
superset of the X.400 specification. HP OpenMail also enables HP Desk
users to exchange information with other users on X.400 networks.
Using HP X.400 with HP Desk
The HP X.400 product using HP Desk provides X.400 message handling
capability for HP Desk on the HP 3000. This product allows HP Desk users
to exchange electronic mail with users of other systems via public mail
services (Public Telegraph and Telephone, PTT)
or through private network services. HP Desk users have the capability
to exchange mail in a multi-vendor environment with users of other
systems that offer X.400 connections.
The X.400 product using HP Desk uses a full OSI networking stack, with
Session, Transport, and lower layer protocols that conform to the
OSI recommendations. This product provides format and text conversion,
addressing, and other common electronic mail functions, as defined by the
CCITT
X.400 Recommendations (1984).
There are two methods of using HP X.400 with HP Desk: HP X.400/HP Desk
with HP X.400 or HP OpenMail with HP X.400.
Using HP X.400/HP Desk with HP X.400, HP X.400 runs an X.400 system that
is specially configured to serve as an off-board processor for handling
X.400 messages. It connects via a LAN (Local Area Network) or X.25 to
the HP X.400/HP Desk Node
which is an HP 3000 system. The X.400 system connects to the external
X.400 environment using 802.3
, X.25
, or FDDI
. This 802.3, X.25, or FDDI connection can be linked to a public mail
service or to a customer's private mail system.
Figure 1-2. X.400/HP Desk Product Overview
Using HP OpenMail with HP X.400, HP OpenMail is configured to handle HP
Desk messages bound to X.400 and X.400 messages bound to HP Desk. For
more information about the OpenMail connection, refer to the "Using HP
X.400 with the OpenMail Connection" section of this chapter.
