RJE/XL Node Manager's Guide

Common Problems

Some problems relating to RJE/XL installation are not uncommon, for
example, invalid software installations, version incompatibilities,
insufficient MPE XL resources, corrupt configuration files, file system
errors and procedural or user errors. In most cases such problems can be
resolved by examining the circumstances surrounding the problem.

Invalid Software Installation

Run NMMAINT.PUB.SYS to get a listing of all software modules and their
version IDs. Check that all required modules are present and that the
first five characters of the version IDs (v.uu.ff fields) of these
modules are the same within each subsystem. Finally, check the version
IDs with the system status bulletin or other HP source to be sure the
versions of software you have are supported by the MPE XL version you
have. If a problem is found with any of these checks, you have an
incorrect software version installed. Locate a known valid version of
the suspect software (perhaps from one of your system backup tapes) and
install it correctly.

Version Incompatibilities

Version incompatibilities between NMS software and other subsystem
software are a possible problem. Run NMMAINT.PUB.SYS to get a listing of
version IDs for NMS and for all of the NMS dependent subsystems. Locate
the overall version IDs for NMS and for each subsystem. Compare the
first five characters of these version IDs (v.uu.ff fields) with those
listed as compatible with each other in the System Status Bulletin or
other HP source. If a discrepancy is found, locate a known set of
compatible software and install it.

File System Errors

A file system error may have occurred while attempting to access the
configuration file. Try to access the configuration file under the same
userid using NMMGR. Use the NMMGR error screen to determine the
underlying FSERR. If possible, correct the problem and attempt to access
the configuration file again.

Procedural/User Errors

The failure to follow the procedures identified in the RJE
Programmer/User Reference Manual when activating a session or sending a
job will generally generate an error message and will sometimes result in
the failure of the attempted task.

Host Access

The RJE/XL program does not automatically return HASP messages from the
host. You must initiate all replies from the host with an RJOUT. If you
attempt to send a job to the host while it is attempting to send output,
your efforts will be unsuccessful without any indication from the host as
to the cause of failure.

In addition, if you attempt to logon to a remote host ID that is already
signed on, the attempt will be unsuccessful without any indication from
the host as to the cause of the failure.
