RJE/XL Node Manager's Guide

General Considerations

Following is a list of elements to be considered when establishing
communications between RJE/XL and another computer system. This list
applies specifically to communication between RJE/XL and an IBM JES2 host
system, but the items should be considered when establishing
communication with any other system.

Host Side Considerations

You should consider the following host elements when establishing
communication with any other system.

 * Type of host operating system - the type of host is defined in the
IBM 3704/3705, IBM 3725 emulation program (EP).

 * Type of communication controller - the type of communication
controller is defined in the EP.

 * Subchannel address - the subchannel address is defined in the LINE
macro of the EP and under the JES2 generation in the linedefinition.

 * Line number - the line number is defined in the JES2 generation in
    the line and remote definitions.

 * Remote number - the remote number is defined in the JES2 generation
in the remote definition. It is also used by RJE/XL for the SIGNON
card image in the configuration file.

 * IBM 3705 or IBM 3725 address - the address is defined in the LINE
    macro of the EP.

Line Considerations

You should consider the following line elements when establishing
communication with any other system.

 * Type of line (dialed or leased) - the type of line is defined in the
EP, JES2 generation, and RJE/XL generation.

 * Type of line (full or half duplex) - full or half duplex is defined
in the EP, JES2 generation, and RJE/XL generation.

 * Type of line control (must be BSC) - the line control is defined in
    the EP.

 * Line speed - the line speed is defined in the EP.

 * Line code (must be EBCDIC) - the line code is defined in the EP and
    JES2 generation.

 * Data transmission characteristics (transparency, data compression,
tabulation) - data transmission characteristics are defined in the
JES2 generation under the line and remote definitions. RJE/XL
    automatically handles these characteristics.

Modem Considerations

You should consider the following modem elements when establishing
communication with any other system.

 * Type of modem (full or half duplex) - the type of modem is defined in
the EP, JES2 generation, and RJE/XL configuration.

 * Compatibility - the modems connected to the HP 3000 and IBM host must
    be compatible.

Workstation Considerations

You should consider the following workstation elements when establishing
communication with any other system.

 * Workstation type (IBM 2780 or IBM 3780) - workstation type is defined
in the EP, JES2 generation, and RJE/XL configuration.

 * Workstation mode (slave or master) - IBM hosts assume the master role
by default. RJE/XL should usually be configured as slave when
connecting to an IBM system. This configuration item affects the
line bid collision timeout value. The site designated as the slave
delays for a longer period of time after a line bid collision. This
allows the master site to gain control of the line first when there
    is a collision.

IBM 3745 Controller Generation

The IBM 3745 generation (NCP version 5) will be similar to the IBM 3725.

Migration Guide.
