Chapter 8 Performance Management Tools
HP GlancePlus for MPE/iX On the Move Again
by Mel Eelkema & Gary Robillard
Software Technology Division
HP GlancePlus is on the move again with more enhancements, while keeping
the same look and feel you have grown to love. Most of the new features
increase GlancePlus' ease of use and configurability. The default
settings for the new features make GlancePlus look and feel the same as
always. As with each previous version, its usefulness in real business
situations has been guaranteed by customer prototyping in production
environments.
New Functionality at a Glance
The following information describes the enhancements now available with
HP GlancePlus for MPE/iX.
Softkeys Enhanced.
GlancePlus is now more Softkey-driven than previous releases. You now
have a choice of using the single-key command interface that you have
worked with in the past or you can use the new Softkey interface. There
are now 3 sets of softkeys which allow you to choose the GlancePlus
screens.
Disk Screen Enhancements.
The Disk Screen has been enhanced in several ways. For systems with many
disk drives, we now only show disks that have some activity. To see all
disks, the A command can be used as in any other screen.
To help characterize the disk queue length, we added a column showing the
average queue length for each disk since GlancePlus has been running or
the last Z command was issued.
The disk screen also now shows average disk utilization by displaying an
asterisk in the disk utilization line for each disk.
New BackView Screen.
A new BackView screen provides a visual representation of your system's
performance over the last 30 intervals. A summary of the Global bars,
condensed onto one line, displays for each of the past 30 intervals. The
BackView screen is displayed by using the B command or by pressing the
BackView softkey (F1 in softkey set #3)
New Workload Manager Screen.
A new Workload Manager Screen helps you tune the Workgroups that are
available with the new Workload Manager product (B3879AA) on MPE/iX 5.0.
This screen is accessible by using the K command or by using the Workload
Manager softkey (F1 on main set).
A new parameter, WORKGROUP, can be used in the Glancnfg file. You can
use WORKGROUP to define processes that are added to an application.
WORKGROUP can also be associated with a Workload Manager Workgroup.
Resources used by all processes defined by the Workgroup are added to the
resources used by other processes in the application defined.
For example, the following application definition:
Application HEAVY USERS
User ONLINE.REPORTS
Workgroup ONLINE_COMPILES
would create an application named "heavy users". All users who logged on
to that system as "online.reports" would be added to this application,
AND all of the processes that are part of the "online_compiles" Workload
Manager Workgroup would be added to the application "heavy users".
Other Enhancements.
A new function to estimate time to completion has been added to the
Process Screen. When a specific process is performing a serial read of a
file, GlancePlus estimates how long this process takes to complete if all
things on your system remain the same. This function is designed for use
with Batch programs performing serial reads.
The Job/Session screen now shows the total CPU for all processes,
including processes that have already died.
The ":" command now allows you to enter multiple MPE commands without
returning to the GlancePlus screen. You can continue to enter MPE
commands until you press RETURN without entering a command. In case you
are interrupted while GlancePlus is still running, a sixty second timer
returns you to GlancePlus if no MPE command has been entered.
The idea of PROCKEYS=CONTINUOUS has been extended to cover the Queue
Change and Use (list Users of a file) commands. When PROCKEYS are set to
continuous, GlancePlus continues to prompt for more changes until you
press RETURN without a new command. This feature allows you to perform
more changes in a shorter amount of time.
