Introducing NetWare v3.11 for the HP 3000
by Cliff Chew
Information Networks Division
NetWare v3.11 for the HP 3000 provides the functionality of the Novell
Inc. NetWare PC services to the HP 3000 Series 900. From a Novell
NetWare client, the NetWare services running on the HP 3000 Series 900
will look identical to those running on a PC NetWare server. The
services available with NetWare for the HP 3000 include file and printer
sharing, server administration functions, connection maintenance, bindery
facility, print queue management, and accounting services.
NetWare v3.11 for the HP 3000 is based on the Novell 3.11 release of
NetWare for UNIX (formerly called Portable NetWare). Earlier versions of
NetWare for the HP 3000 were based on the 3.01B release. Novell
developed NetWare for UNIX as a source code product that provides native
NetWare compatible distributed services to networks of PCs and
workstations when integrated into a host operating system (such as, MPE).
Features new in v3.11 include:
* Burst Mode - allows a client to issue a single read or write
request to the server for blocks of data up to 64KB, significantly
improving the read/write performance of large files.
* Remote printers - allows the NetWare v3.11 for the HP 3000 server
to print to printers attached to PCs running the RPRINTER.EXE
program.
NetWare for the HP 3000 product is supported over Ethernet v2.0, 802.3,
and 802.5 (Token Ring) LANs only. The ThinLAN 3000/XL Link (HP 36923A)
or Token Ring 3000/iX Link (J2167A) is a prerequisite product for NetWare
for the HP 3000. The link must be configured (linkname and link path)
and started. The NS transport is not required to be configured and
started. For those systems that can support one LAN card for both DTC
and system traffic (currently HP 3000 Series 935 and below) the ThinLAN
3000/XL Link product is still required because of software dependencies.
Features not supported by NetWare for the HP 3000 are:
* IP Tunneling
* NetWare Loadable Modules
* NetWare Virtual Terminal (virtual terminal services is available
by using the HP PC NS/ARPA Services (J2246A) and HP AdvanceLink
(D2104C) products, both purchased separately)
