PING/iX is an interactive utility that can be used to confirm
the reachability of a remote node that supports the internet protocol
(IP). It can also be used to estimate round trip times before proceeding
with lengthy transactions.
PING/iX sends Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) Echo
Requests to the remote node once a second, and monitors the echo
replies that arrive.
If you choose to send four or more bytes of data with the
Echo Requests, PING/iX displays the round trip times in milliseconds.
Since the echo is performed at layer 3 of the ISO OSI model, PING/iX
cannot be used to find out if a particular application is available
on the remote node, or to estimate application-level round trip
times.
