COMMUNICATOR 3000/XL: XL REL. 2.2 (A.41.00)
Introducing HP TurboSTORE/XL II
by Tim Canepa--Commercial Systems Division
Hewlett-Packard is proud to announce the introduction of two new
products, TurboSTORE/XL II (HP36387A) and TurboSTORE/XL II With On-Line
Backup (HP36388A). TurboSTORE/XL II features new high performance data
compression that dramatically increases performance and capacity of your
backup devices. The addition of ANSI and IBM labeled tape support
increases your ability to manage offline data while reducing operational
errors. Newly featured parallel restore devices allow fast data recovery
from disaster situations, and on-line backup without redundant disk
mirroring minimizes your planned down time, increasing your system's
overall availability.
Refer to the related article "HP STORE/XL Enhancements" in this
Communicator for more detailed information on labeled tape, DDS, and fast
search features also supported with this XL Release of HP STORE/XL.
PRODUCT OVERVIEW
TurboSTORE/XL II and TurboSTORE/XL With On-Line Backup II are yet another
step towards increasing your system's availability. New product features
are targeted at decreasing system down time, reducing system recovery
time and increasing data manageability. For those users requiring
continuous operation, the on-line backup option provides a solution for
their availability needs. With the introduction of high capacity DDS
support and software data compression, unattended data backup becomes a
reality with the potential of storing nearly 4.7 Gigabytes of data on one
DAT tape.
PRODUCT FEATURES
Both products offer the following features with the exception of on-line
backup, which is specific to TurboSTORE/XL II With On-Line Backup
(HP36388A):
* Software Data compression
* IBM and ANSI compatible labeled tape support
* Data restore from parallel devices
* On-line backup without redundant disk mirroring (HP36388A only)
* Full compatibility with HP STORE/XL
* DDS support
* Fast search to minimize time to locate individual files on DDS
Software Data Compression
Through the use of software data compression, great increases in backup
performance can be achieved. To increase flexibility, two different data
compression algorithms are provided. The first is designed for high
performance providing approximately 2:1 data compression effectively
doubling backup device performance and capacity. The second algorithm
provides high data density (approximately 3.6:1), maximizing media
capacity for unattended solutions. Of course since data compression is
wholly dependent on the type of data being compressed, some sites will
experience higher than average compression while others will experience
lower than average compression. Databases and ASCII files experience the
highest compression while program files and libraries experience the
lowest compression. With the use of the low compression, high
performance data compression algorithm, dramatic improvements can be
witnessed even when backing up to a 7980XC.
IBM and ANSI Compatible Labeled Tape Support
By providing IBM and ANSI compatible tape formats, TurboSTORE/XL II
allows you to track and catalog your system backups. In fact,
TurboSTORE/XL II supports parallel backup to labeled tapes providing a
high performance solution while increasing data manageability. Use of
labeled tapes also reduces the probability of operational errors by
protecting against tape miss-mounts. Labeled tapes are supported by the
base STORE/RESTORE subsystem on this XL Release allowing full
compatibility with tapes created by TurboSTORE/XL II.
Data Restore From Parallel Devices
TurboSTORE/XL II now allows you to restore data from parallel devices
reducing your data recovery time. Only tapes created from a parallel
STORE can be recovered in this manner, although sequential devices can be
used for any type of data restore.
On-Line Backup Without Redundant Disk Mirroring
For those environments where 24-hour-a-day operation is critical,
TurboSTORE/XL II with on-line backup (HP36388A) can be ordered. No
application modification is required to take advantage of this high
availability feature. The only impact on application processing is a
short period of time where the application is stopped to ensure complete
logical integrity. After the backup is started, applications can
continue processing throughout the duration of the backup.
Full Compatibility With HP STORE/XL
The tape format of TurboSTORE/XL II is fully compatible with the format
of TurboSTORE/XL and HP STORE/XL. This allows complete freedom of
interchange between HP 3000 Series 900 systems.
DDS Support
TurboSTORE/XL II supports the use of the high capacity storage technology
available with Digital Data Storage (DDS). DDS media are compact Digital
Audio Tape (DAT) cassettes. Although much smaller than 1/2-inch tape
reels, each DAT cassette has a capacity of 1.3 Gigabytes of storage.
When used in conjunction with compression features, the capacity
increases to approximately 4.7 Gigabytes of total capacity. This version
of HP STORE/XL also supports the use of DDS devices.
Fast Search to Minimize Time to Locate Individual Files on DDS
TurboSTORE/XL II supports fast search technology for DDS devices allowing
fast individual file access and recovery despite the media's enormous
capacity. Fast search is also supported in this version of HP STORE/XL.
