COMMUNICATOR 3000/XL: XL REL. 2.2 (A.41.00)
Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION
XL Release 2.2 (A.41.00) Overview
by Myrna Allen--Commercial Systems Division
The Commercial Systems XL Release 2.2 (A.41.00) introduces many new
products and contains performance enhancements to existing products.
This commercial release of MPE XL further extends the functionality of
the MPE XL operating system.
For customers moving from XL Release 2.2 to a pre-2.1 release, please
read the XL 2.1 Communicator. XL Release 2.1 included a number of major
changes to existing products and the operating system, and new products
were introduced.
SYSTEM PRODUCTS AND INFORMATION
The Architected Interface Facilities has added a new product:
Measurement Interface. This product, the second in the Architected
Interface series, provides access to system performance information. The
first product, Architected Interface Facility: OS, provides access to
general operating system data definitions and functionality.
This release introduces two new products, TurboSTORE/XL II (HP36387A) and
TurboSTORE/XL II with online backup (HP36388A). Both products include the
following features: software data compression, data restore from
parallel devices, full compatibility with HP STORE/XL, and DDS support.
In addition, HP36388A features an online backup facility.
Enhancements have been added to HP STORE/XL that provide labeled tape
support, DDS support, and fast search technology.
HPVOLINFO, a new volume intrinsic, allows retrieval of volume information
from both system and nonsystem volumes. No special capabilities are
required to use this intrinsic, which can retrieve information on drives
type, volume type, free space information, the number of volume sets, and
the list of volume sets.
The Native Mode Spooler introduced in XL Release 2.1 includes specific
information about its migration with SPOOK, the obsoleted CM Spooler
utility. Spoolfiles now become recoverable disk files which are handled
by the NM file system. In addition, three new commands (LISTSPF:,
:SPOOLER, and :SPOOLF) and two new utilities (SPFXFER and PRINTSFP)
increase the functionality of this new product.
KSAM provides information on differences between CM KSAM and KSAM XL.
This information will help you when deciding to migrate your
applications.
With this release, the HP 3000 Printer Support Package (PSP) is supported
in native mode (NM). Using PSP in native mode is almost identical to
using PSP in compatibility mode.
Enhancements have been made to the IO and the MISC configurators which
improve SYSGEN functionality and support new changes to the Operating
System. These changes include a new LDEV listing format, support for
Native Language peripherals, and a new IL commands.
The NM file close log record has been enhanced to include two new fields.
These fields were added to accommodate customers who use similar data on
their MPE V/E systems for billing and want the equivalent information on
their XL system.
DATA COMMUNICATIONS
HP OpenView System Manager reduces the number of operators required to
manage multiple networked HP 3000 systems by allowing the operators to
monitor and control their systems from a single console. In addition, HP
OpenView System Manager offers: faster default detection, reduced
operations cost, fault notification, and improved operator efficiency.
Hewlett-Packard introduces HP SNA Distribution Services/XL. With this new
product, HP Desk users can now exchange mail with IBM users who reside on
other HP Desk nodes.
The HP ARPA File Transfer Protocol product provides file transfers and
file accesses to other systems that have implemented the ARPA FTP
service. This ARPA FTP service has been implemented on a variety of
systems, such as DEC, SUN, and IBM.
ThinLAN 3000/XL Link has been enhanced to allow customers with existing
ThinLAN 3000/XL Link hardware to communicate with Ethernet nodes on the
LAN.
Enhancements have been added to the DTC/X.25 XL System Network Link that
provides users with additional network communication capabilities. New
features include: load balancing, increased number of virtual circuits,
and increased performance.
The Network File Transfer (NFT) service of the 3000/XL Network Services
now includes a Checkpoint/Restart facility. This new facility allows
users of the NFT service to resume file transfers that have been aborted
due to transient problems.
Node Management Configuration Manager for XL (NMMGR/XL) has been enhanced
in six areas: configuration file backup, guided NS configuration, DTS
configuration, help system, print summary, and maintenance mode.
The APPC subsystem has been enhanced to provide better recovery of
Logical Units (LUs). With this feature, link failures and host-initiated
session deactivations can now be recovered.
This release of MPE XL includes enhancements to the Datacommunications
and Terminal Controller (DTC/3000) that offer fewer NMMGR configuration
screens, more NMMGR configuration profiles, and flexible typeahead echo
mode.
DATABASE TOOLS
MPE XL Release 2.2 introduces HP ALLBASE/Turbo CONNECT. This new product
allows transparent read access to TurboIMAGE/XL data through the
ALLBASE/SQL relational interface.
SUPPORT TOOLS
The HP Predictive Support software has been modified to run on MPE XL
2.2. Users who have the HP SuccessLine hardware support agreement and
plan to upgrade to MPE XL 2.2, must also update to this version of HP
Predictive Support XL.
SOFTWARE PRODUCTS
Hewlett-Packard introduces HP Software Performance Tuner/XL, an
interactive tool that monitors and reports resource usage of native mode
application programs.
This release also introduces GlancePlus/XL a real-time performance
diagnostic tool which replaces Glance/XL. GlancePlus/XL retains all
original Glance/XL commands, with the following new features: new
screens, commands and increased customization capabilities. In addition,
some existing screens and commands have been modified for increased
functionality.
TRANCOMP/XL is now available on MPE XL Release 2.2. TRANCOMP/XL
incorporates all the features of TRANCOMP/V plus the ability to compile
larger programs and a reduced need for segmentation.
The NewWave Office product has added NewWave Office License Control.
This new feature is used to enforce software license agreements.
The Information Access services of HP NewWave Office allow the user to
spend less time gathering data and more time analyzing and solving
business problems. Two new products have been added that enable the PC
to connect to and retrieve information form HP ALLBASE/SQL and ORACLE
databases. In addition, this release contains enhancements to
Information Access Server and Information Access PC.
